Photographer’s Note

The name of the village Molenaarsgraaf originated about the latter half of the 13th century, when the Lord of the Manor of Molenaarsgraaf of that time, Willem de Molenaar, gave the order to dig a canal. The border between the villages of Molenaarsgraaf and Brandwijk runs through the centre of the Graafstroom canal

Molenaarsgraaf lies on the small bog stream Graafstroom or Alblas. Cyclists following the signposted ‘Molenroute’ [Windmill route] pass through this ribbon development village with its Kerkmolen (watermill) and partly sixteenth-century Dutch Reformed church.

For the one under us who got the possibility to come in this surroundings villages. It is a pleasure for every photographer, that is a promos, from me to you.

there always has been something about people living along waters that fascinates me. Their lifestyle, as visibile in your picture, is so much different from that of the rest of 'land-inhabitants'.

there is so much calmness coming out of your picture, that it's impossible for the viewer not to relax himself.

Late autumn/winter can have the best light as the sun doesn't ever get too high. The stillness of the day made this canal ripple-free so you have a wonderful mirror to reflect not only the surroundings but also the gorgeous blue sky. The boats also make an excellent colourful display.

Een erg fraaie herfstfoto met heel mooi scherp licht.
Door het heldere licht ook mooie kleuren en door het rustige water hele mooie reflecties.

This is a great shot with amazing color and lighting. The reflection is great giving the shot nice depth and balance. The canal creates a nice diagonal through the shot leading the eye from right to left. The deep blue sky provides a nice backdrop for the scene.

Just by chance, a classic-fm radio station that I always listen to from Holland was playing Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as I was admiring this photo. That is appropriate accompaniment for a an image so fine. As for the colors, your have recreated the colors of the Dutch flag magnificently in this shot.

A new photo in your intro, with a bigger fish!... LOLLL! You look much younger also... :-P)

Here you are again, promoting your monopod technique; you know what? I will probably buy one as soon as I get a job, if it allows me to get some gorgeous shots like yours in difficult light conditions... But I'm surprised to see that you had 1/40 seconds at f/14 with a wide angle, with so much nice light! Maybe it's because you lowered your ISO at 50, as you are fanatic for quality images - but I'm with you on that one.

Anyway, the result is splendid, for the setting you were in of course, but for these three basic coloured boats, standing out of the fall vegetation. Their triangular position enhance your composition and serves as a very eye-catching foreground.

Three boats bring a lot of gaiety with their lively colors. The square format is unusual for a landscape as this one but it is nice. You had maybe other houses on the sides which you wanted to remove.
