Photographer’s Note

After my previous posts of selling cannabis in the Flower Market and consuming soft drugs in Coffeeshops, some of you may think that the Netherlands is a free-for-all, land of no-rules. That's a wrong idea. Even the soft drugs business is controlled and there is no tolerance towards hard drugs.
In this picture you see a strong reminder that rules are to be obeyed, even in a small rural road.
This is the Polder Het Koegras. Polders are embanked parcels of land, at or bellow sea level. The water in the polders must be regulated by ditches, canals, dikes and pumping stations (formerly the famous windmills; nowadays electric pumping). Polders make up 60% of the Netherlands. The biggest polders in the world are those of the IJsselmeer, reclaimed from the Zuider Sea and constituting now the province of Flevoland.
Het Koegras is a big producer of flowers and bulbs. In its centre lies the village of Julianadorp, part of the municipality of Den Helder, province of Noord-Holland. Julianadorp celebrates 100 years in 2009.
