The Nieuwmarkt square (New Market) is dominated by a very large romantic castle with gates and turrets known as De Waag - the Weighing House. The building is the former St. Anthony's Gate, which lost its defensive purpose when the city tore down its medieval walls around 1400.
The gate was subsequently used as a weighing house and as a guild-hall by the bricklayers, the painters and the surgeons. The doctors built a theatre inside for the public dissection of human corpses. In later years the building housed the Amsterdam Historical Museum and the Jewish Historical Museum. The open space around the Waag has always been a market, especially for the trade in herbs and spices. The market now is on Saturdays only and sells all naturally produced products.
De Waag, dating from the 1480's - this lovely building was once one of the city's gates. It has been a weighing-house and a place where the surgeons guild would perform public dissections! It has recently been completely renovated and is a beautiful cafe-bar/restaurant. (Fabulous interior decor lit by hundreds of candles.) During the summer months there is a large out door terrace.
Amsterdam is one of the greatest small cities in the world. From its canals to world-famous museums and historical sights, Amsterdam is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe.
Amsterdam is also a city of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, nightlife, international restaurants, good transport - but is quiet, and largely thanks to its canals, has a little road traffic. In Amsterdam your destination is never far away, but get a bike for most authentic experience.
Its name is derived from Amstel dam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel where the Dam Square is today. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were formed.
The city is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, and 7 of the world's top 500 companies, including Philips and ING, are based in the city. The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, part of Euronext, is located in the city centre. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, its red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops, draw 4.2 million tourists annually.

L'absence de soleil ne t'empêche pas de nous proposer une photo intéressante, avec de château tout rouge au fond du cours d'eau, bonne profondeur d'image.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

The solitary bird in the sky animates the scene, & it's reasonably sharp, too. A wonderful canal scene, with good color & overall sharpness & lots of interesting details to explore. Tfs!

That building commands view at the end of that canal. Architecture is impressive and differs from surrounding houses. Colours look good even on that cloudy weather.

robertosalguero (246) 2009-02-27 22:37

a pleasant scene from Amsterdam, with a good sweeping overview on the river. Nice lighting to show this richly-detailed view, and good depth from the lines that lead the viewer's eye towards the very beautiful castle in the back.
All the best.

Despite the grey weather you managed to capture a view full of vivid colours, especially with the brick walls of de Waag. Good POV too where the canal leads the eye very well into the composition. Thanks for sharing!
saylan-cb (12738) 2009-03-02 7:53
The view is perfect with great capture and good details.I like the colours and POV here.
Have a nice day.
Angshu (56454) 2009-03-04 0:27
The red castle at the end of the canal is a certain eye catcher. Good use of the canal & the trees for perspective leading us directly to the castle. Light doesn't seem to be optimal, but still you've created a wonderful picture. Good work!
