Photographer’s Note

Kasteel Duivenvoorde (Castle Duivenvoorde) is in the town of Voorschoten, Zuid-Holland in the Netherlands. It was first mentioned in 1226, making it one of the older castles in Zuid-Holland

The castle is remarkable in that it was never sold; it was inherited by several different noble houses, sometimes through the matrilineal line, something that can be said of very few Dutch castles. For the first five centuries of its history, the castle was owned by one and the same family, namely the Van Duivenvoordes, who gave their name - at that time, van Duvenvoirde - to the castle. Though the castle was named thus, the van Duvenvoirdes properly formed part of the House of Wassenaer, an ancient noble family that has played an important role in Dutch history. Toward the end of the 17th century an owner of Kasteel Duivenvoorde, Johan, retook the name of van Wassenaar, upon which the House of Duivenvoorde became merely another name in the castle’s history.

Sometimes you have a day when you made a lot of good photo's, well that day at tghe castle was such a day. I made a lot of good photo's. This is another of them. This is a view of the avenue to the castle. I hope you like it to.

Hello Jaap, I love the light that one gets when a storm is due, the sky becomes dark but the sun is still shining;you have captured that beautiful time.
The trees and the fence make a good frame for the castle in the distance.I like the shadows falling across the field.

Hallo Jaap,
Ik wil niet zeggen dat we dit licht dagelijks zien, maar toch wel vaak. Al die andere niet Nederlands blijven toch schijnbaar hun ogen uitkijken naar ons mooie licht...hebben we toch nog iets om trots op te zijn ;-)
Wat mij het meest aanspreekt hier zijn die enorme lange schaduwen over het land van de bomen. Die geven er een enorme diepte aan en tevens een mooi spel met licht en schaduw. Ook de diep grijze lucht er boven werkt prima mee, net als je kadering...mooie foto..!!!

I like this image very much! the shadows of the trees and fence extend far in to the field, but then the shadow ends and there is a brilliant illuminated green area before the Castle and the trees beyond. The backdrop of the threatening sky creates a stage-like setting. A very beautiful composition, spectacular light and the usual masterful post-processing.

Hi Jaap,

When you mention in your note that: "Sometimes you have a day when you made a lot of good photo's...", I'm sure that these special days are usually happening when the light above your head is collaborative.

Just like in this pastoral landscape, where there's no awesome castles or windmills to make us fall on our back, but rather a simple and pleasing view, where the light is absolutely fantastic. The more I learn about photography, the more I realize that light is everything and your photo is there to prove it.
