Photographer’s Note

Kasteel Duivenvoorde (Castle Duivenvoorde) is in the town of Voorschoten, Zuid-Holland in the Netherlands. It was first mentioned in 1226, making it one of the older castles in Zuid-Holland

The castle is remarkable in that it was never sold; it was inherited by several different noble houses, sometimes through the matrilineal line, something that can be said of very few Dutch castles. For the first five centuries of its history, the castle was owned by one and the same family, namely the Van Duivenvoordes, who gave their name - at that time, van Duvenvoirde - to the castle. Though the castle was named thus, the van Duvenvoirdes properly formed part of the House of Wassenaer, an ancient noble family that has played an important role in Dutch history. Toward the end of the 17th century an owner of Kasteel Duivenvoorde, Johan, retook the name of van Wassenaar, upon which the House of Duivenvoorde became merely another name in the castle’s history.

Excellent color! I really like the shadows in the foreground. I like the clouds and blue sky as well. Everything just seems to work out. I'd like to know what, if any, processing you did to this photo after you took it. Well done.

Yes it's a nice one, Jaap, at first I thought there was too much foreground, but the concentric shadows in the fg made me understand why you framed it like this, very nice progression to the well illuminated castle.

Dag, Jaap. De compositie is zeer goed met de pond die naar het kasteel leidt en de takken op de voorgrond die een zeer goede diepte aan het beeld geven. Het kasteel komt zeer goed uit op de prachtige lucht en krijgt een mooie weersiegeling op het water. Dit alles oner een zeer goed licht.

Gorgeous light as usual, the sky above the branch at the upper left corner needs to be darkened further to match the colour of the sky below the branch, otherwise perfect.

Hallo Jaap,
Ben blij dat er in de voorgrond nog zoveel doortekening zit, vooral in dat grindpad. Er zit een mooi spel met licht in de foto wat allerlei lijnen naar voren brengt, dat geeft de hele foto een enorme diepte. En alhoewel het huis ietwat in de verdrukking komt door al die andere elementen, komt hij vanwege het licht toch nog erg goed tot zijn recht.

The lighting in this photo is great, the castle seems to be spotlighted. The water leading to the castle is very good providing nice direction and giving us a nice reflection. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF. The overhanging branches and shadows provide nice framing for the shot.

Another fine composition under a beautiful light. The low point of view is well chosen to guide the viewer's eyes across the lake towards the this beautiful castle and its mirror image. Hallo Jaap,

Ik was vandaag de ganse dag op stap, (geen foto's) vandaar wat late reacties.
U speelt hier duidelijk met licht en schaduwen, wat uw foto absoluut ten goede komt, want het kasteel bevind zich zeer diep, in de foto maar de weerspiegelingen maken dit dan weer goed.
Uw herfst beeld doet het bijzonder goed.

De lange schaduwen in de voorgrond leiden je blik in de richting van het gebouw. Dat kasteel staat betrekkelijk klein iets uit het centrum van de foto.
Het mooie licht op het gebouw en in de bomen er omheen komt zo wel mooit tot zijn recht. de mooie wolkenpartij en het groen van het gras maken het plaatje compleet.

Fantastic photo, excellent perspective, the branches and their shadows seem to lead the eye towards the magnificent castle! Incredible sky! Great light managment, and fantastic colours! The only thing that I would like to say as negative, is that you 've used large borders. I think that with a smaller border we could enjoy more of this fabulous photo!

I like the composition very much, sometimes I find breaking the one third rule refreshing, the curve of the water leads to the beautiful castle and its reflection, the two green parts of the grass give nice balance. It all suits well to the square format you have chosen.

Olá Jaap, what a magnificent capture from a distance. The Castle shines beautifully in the background. The normal take would be a closer capture of the lake with the reflection, but I love this diferent one framed by the light in the road and the branches of the tree. Congrats, once again.

I wonder Jaap, was the light that beautiful or you "helped" it a bit?:)
I cannot know but the result is incredibly beautiful,the photo has everything it needs and even more:the long shadows pointing to the castle,the reflection in the pond,the natural frame of the tree branches and even the interesting fence on the left.
I`m looking at your photo and I`m saying to myself:how would I like to be there!
