Photographer’s Note
Salty Dog
The Zhen Hua 10, a 250m long freight vessel transporting 5 container cranes for Rotterdam and Bremen Harbour, ran aground last February near the Maasvlakte during a force 10 storm. The acronym ZPMC on the hull stands for : Zhen Hua Port Machine Company, the Shanghai company that manufactured the cranes. A small rescue dog came to assess the situation ;-). After three tries involving three tugs and 48 hours the vessel was towed in deeper water and could resume its journey.
Captured during an impromptu shoot with Rinie.
This will be my last post on TE for a long while my friends. I want to thank you warmly for all your support, kind words and enthusiasm the 4 ½ years I was active here on the site. Interacting with you I learned more about photography then I thot was possible, I made friends, and some of you crossed the border between the virtual and the real. And that’s great.
I always like to compare web communities with spaces in the real world and TE can be seen as a nice square where you hang out, exchange photo’s, meet your circle of friends, chat with newcomers and learn. The last 2 years I didn’t spend as much time here as before ‘cause the TE format with its rules and somewhat outdated interface were to constricting for the way I wanted my photography web presence to be. Having said that, posting on TE once a week felt good.
But lately I’m increasingly busy running my own consulting company. And TE? Well, the communicative culture of the forums has become somewhat objectionable and (in the process) the watchtowers have become higher, the bull horns louder. A vicious circle? I don’t know …… anyway, a set of conditions that prompted me to stop participating.
So thanx again of course also to Adam for developing the great TE format and maintaining the site…...goodbye for now.
Salty Dog was a classic sixties hit from Procul Harum. From the album with the same name, released on A&M in March 1969.
The PCS3 work flow: I altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed, added a frame and resized and did a gentle USM (0,3px, 18%) again on a 36 % transparent layer.

Hi Bert!
I remember song "A Salty Dog" by Gary Brooker and Procol Harum. Amazing song. Wonderful picture.
Cordially!

And you have chosen a great photo to say so long and I keep in mind the "for a while" you´ve used. The melancolic mood works perfectly in this photo, Bert and the tender touch of the doggy (Simon Kolton, Flydragon would have love it) gives strenght to this photo.
Already missing you in TE,
Miguel

Fantástico cenário, composição, cores, nitidez e, principalmente a idéia subjacente neste trabalho fotográfico. A foto "conta" uma história e isto a valoriza muito. A presença do cão em primeiro plano observando a grande estrutura ao fundo dá vida à foto. De resto, a parte técnica da mesma é impecável.

Hi Bert,
Fantastic shot and very well spotted. I would say that this a very typical Bertolucci. You have a very good eye for this kind of daily life scenes where all of sudden something happens. Excellent photo job. TFS and have a nice week end!
Cheers,
Ulf

pracht foto Bert.
Prettig weekend.
groet Jaap

As I said before, I regret to lose a friend and a teacher. I won't comment too much about the image, humorous, very well composed, once again with an excellent PP. I'll only manifest my sadness and wish you all the best.
[]'s, my friend.

Hi Bert,
Hahaha, wonderful story about the reque dog assessing the situation. And yes, the first thing I thought of was Procul Harum. Well, actually the second thing, since the first thing I thought about was the kid's clothing brand Salty Dog.
And as you see, exactly your type of dog!
Greetings,
Dennis

Oh, Bert, you did not tell me! Feeling a bit lonely not only because a friend is saying goodbye for a while but because TE looses one of its best photographers.
Thankfully I am part of both the "virtual" and the "real" bunch of friends of yours:))
Lovely image to close a circle - a virtuous circle, btw - with an extraordinary control of light and colors. That cute dog, as Miguel said, would make Flydragon very happy.
Stay well, friend. Hope to meet you very soon.

Hello bert, well, being an occassional visitor myself now, I miss a lot of your occassional postings. Anyway, a magic scene here, love the light on it, and the dog makes it a classic oddball.

Hi Bert
Absolutely charming! The tiny red spot in front of the huge construction. A very great POV that gives the exact view of what it can see, sharp and clear details and great color range. All in one!
Have a great day

Hello Bert,

Amicalement.
Daniel
