Ever since I discovered the beauty of my father's hands, over 20 years ago, I have always been fascinated by hands.
But it was Curtis with the workshop on one of my pictures who showed me a lot of tenderness, also with his own picture 'touching'. For a while, I went back again and again to both these pictures. Therefore this one is for Curtis.
So, I look for those moments when I'm out with my camera, a combination of tenderness and hands.
This one year old boy was listening to an Australian band that was playing during a Street Performance Festival in Rotterdam. All the time he wanted to go near, but I guess his father was afraid that he might get stuck in the electrical cords, not the best place for a one year old.
Unsharp mask on the hands, cloned out some overcast parts in the background, and burned the background a bit, some level adjustements, and added a frame

A lovely, sensitive shot with good dof. I might consider cropping a bit from left or right so the meeting of the hands is not so centered.
Aegean (2571) 2004-08-28 4:31
Perfect DOF and sharp details on skin textures...Composition and lighting works very nice...I love the idea and the feelings behind this photo...

bfly (5775) 2004-08-28 5:02
very good picture Rinnie :) age difference shows itself more in the skin than size..it is indeed a tender moment..especially knowing they don't know eachother..babies are fantastic with their unreserved touches...
tones are very natural too..thanks :)
have a good weekend..

This kind of photos makes the diference...
Cool-ice (5289) 2004-08-28 5:36
Great for its symbolism and very well done technically, particularly the good DOF.
Excellent, Rinie !
Bos (626) 2004-08-28 6:16
nice work here, good dof, allmost reminds me of a painting by leonardo.....
SophieL (6038) 2004-08-28 7:13
Such a tender gesture, and so well captured. Both hands are beautiful, in their own way. I can almost feel the soft pressure of the father's fingers on his son.
Your post-treatment is great, giving all the importance to the hands. Nice light too.
It's also a picture of time passing, the sharing of knowledge and experience with the new generation...
Proxilva (2157) 2004-08-28 7:17
oooh your touching a weak spot here Rinie ;D...
the composition is very good, just like the moment. as i can imagine that a moment after this one the father regrabbs a little tighter...
but this moment has soooo much tension:
just like an achored ship in a storm with the chain ready to break, and the ship to break loose and drift away...
lovely moment... goed weekend!!
ishai (4097) 2004-08-28 7:34
Very powerful Rinie Hoff
I wonder why you didn’t use B&W for this shot
De sharpness and the DOF are very good
nwoehnl (122) 2004-08-28 8:42
And your looking out for the moment resulted in a beautiful moment, Rinie. Very nice and evocative capture in which the touching between the toddler's small hand and the old person's wrinkled hand tells a beautiful story. I was about to consider desaturating the background, but actually I think the DOF is so good here that everything should remain exactly as it is. Great work, well done.
pamastro (7218) 2004-08-28 10:28
I was just on my way out the door to work when I decided I'd just quickly check who posted what on TE and I saw this and had to comment before I left. The first thing that came to my head was you re-invented the center of the Michelangelo's center for the Sistine Chapel, God giving life to Adam. Except here it also goes the opposite way. The father keeping a more limp, child, hand there and then the child's smooth, soft hand, giving life to the older, wrinkled hand of his father. It really is an excellent capture of tenderness as you say and life giving. The great DOF is perfect, too. The focus is on the hands and the life there amidst the chaos of the sounds and sights around it. Excellently spotted and photographed, Rinie.

This is beautiful, Rinie. It is so gentle, but so powerfull. Excellent composition.
Liora (1857) 2004-08-28 13:32
You have such a good eye for human moments Rinie - you capture not only the sight but also the emotion, by choosing just the right crop and DOF. The textures of the skins here are amazing as well. It does bear some resemblance to Curtis' "touching" but they're sensitive in a different way...
Hanssie (10325) 2004-08-28 16:07
Aaaahhh, how did you notice this one, wonder, wonder, wonderful, what a nice capture !
Great work !

kikvel (4784) 2004-08-28 17:13
Delicate motif, full of emotions all of them concentrated in a perfect picture.
The crop is perfect, but what I like the most are your feelings and your awareness of the world as we seldomly see.
Perfect Rinie!!! Thanks for sharing!
phi729 (2101) 2004-08-28 19:53
Hello Rinie :)
Natural and nice colors balance. The DOF is excellent: It detaches (USM post-processing on the hands is judicious and well-dosed: Not too strong) and highlights well the subject in the composition. I find the texture of the adult's hand superb. Hopeful pretty symbolic shot about the next generations. Bravo! for your excellent (always) note too.
manny (21833) 2004-08-28 20:44
Your recent posts are very good. Rinie, this picture speaks a thousand words. What a great contrsat in texture.

It's an admirable shot, with a great cropping, full of meanning,a fine kindly & friendly contrast between old & new in humans,As Paul said above,it's remainds me at firs seeing Michelangelo's work, and you creat it very well in this point.
DOF is very good & result is very fine,You did great Rinie.
naxius (16685) 2004-08-29 12:40
Very tender moment that you have posted Rinie. I like it very much and this a different way to take feelings with a camera.
You did it perfectly.
smael (2878) 2004-08-29 13:19
A very fine moment in time, and I see you showing your own tenderness in this one...
I always long for bw versions in this motives, but the colorrange and mix is very soft and nice here that I don't think it really would've made it better.
It's a bit soft, but here it's ok with me.
avis2avis (4264) 2004-08-30 1:00
You got a winner here Rinie! A very touching moment shot with great timing. The skin textures are really good and overall the colors are really good. Congrats on this super shot!
Rhiannon (1728) 2004-08-30 3:56
Excellent shot. The tenderness is very well captured. You can see how gentle the the adult hand holds the childs hand. Beautiful hands with great details.
B&W is perfect for this subject IMO.

pridel (233) 2004-09-02 12:11
It is a very very beautiful photograph and I also remember both others.
the technical considerations pass after the emotion (good dof and compo nevertheless).
much softness, thank you for this gift
eleparc (24063) 2004-09-09 7:57
I know it is only dedicated to Curtis but seeing the number of smileys and acclaim you received for that shot, Rinie, it seems i can allow myself to step in too;-))
this is excellent my friend and i think your technique and your eye are doing wonders now... i remember the uncertain rinie some months ago who did not dare shoot at people and look now;-)) congrats my friend i am breathless for the better!
kaychambers (1198) 2004-09-13 22:38

Really impressive picture. The two hands, different colors and size gives a lot of power. The logo of a forum that took place last year in Barcelona was very close to the picture and symbolised as well the diversity of cultures and people.
ianmcall (1213) 2005-03-05 1:01
Everything works here; the difference in skin texture, tone and size. Lovely shot.
lucinka (9976) 2005-03-06 9:01

A very nice way to put in the Golden era with the new generation. Symbolic enough to show that the new genereation indeed needs the older one!
sylvie (1183) 2005-05-20 10:59
