Photographer’s Note
Van Brienenoord Twin Bridges
Back to Rotterdam for some architecture shots.
Displayed here is the Van Brienenoord bridge. The largest of the three Rotterdam Maas bridges. It carries the A16 / E19 carriageway, one of the main traffic arteries of the Netherlands. It was commissioned in 1965 and in 10 years became an infamous bottleneck in the Netherlands network. ln 1989 a second bridge was contructed and the number of lanes was doubled from 6 to 12. It’s slightly broader then the first bridge. Its main span (steel with diagonal tension cables) is 290 m. It’s perhaps the least imaginative Rotterdam bridge, but it’s twin arches strike quite a pose.
Captured during a cycle trip last Sunday. I held the Oly over my head to shoot over the barrier and liked the tilt and the slightly motion blurred traffic.
PCS tech: tilted a bit more, slightly cropped, adjusted the levels, contrast saturation and curves; USM-ed , added a frame added and saved for the web.

Hi Bert, hmmm, the bridge is NOT situated in Roubaix, but in Rotterdam, I guess your fingers moved too quickly ;-)
I love the angle, and the possibility to see a bit of the cycling path as well. The lines of the arches are very nice, and it's true the bridge leaves less to the imagination than the other two, but I do like the two arches.
I still regret that I wasn't there when they brought in the second arch by boat.
Enjoy your weekend.

Interesting PoV, and I like the way you've twisted the frame a bit to get the best compo. You can't get anything past that bridge expert can you.

Goeiemorgen Bert,

One of your classic graphisms, Bert - the pattern of steel and cable construction is quite compelling, and you made a good timing to include the variety of vehicles on the road. I also think that the tilt works nicely on this one. Good exposure balancing to render the late afternoon light ambience.

Very well executed Bert, wonderful presentation of the bridge, the tilt is incredible for me. We can see a bit of the path, great effect, looks like a swigning bridge ! I like it, very good post, thanks for sharing.

Hi Bert,

The well-known bridge of "your" Rotterdam.
Many times crossed this one but never been there to make a photo, so I like this nice view through your eyes. Always fascinating, the bridges and our rivers
