Photographer’s Note

The largest green attraction is the National Park De Biesbosch A large part of this lies within the territory of Dordrecht and is called locally de Hollandse Biesbosch. Including the Brabant part [Brabant lies to the south of Dordrecht], the Biesbosch covers 7100 hectares. It is one of the largest tidal areas in Europe, where fresh water has a free rein. The system of rivers, creeks, willow groves and reeds can mainly be reached only with a canoe or a small motorboat. Of course, much of the attraction of this wetland area lies in its impassability. Silence still reigns in the Biesbosch.

A number of footpaths lead alongside grasslands and rough reed beds. On the way the walker comes across plants which only thrive in a damp to wet environment. Unique to the Biesbosch are triangular club-rush or scirpus triqueter and caltha palustris var. araneosa, a species of marsh marigold which does not appear in such large numbers anywhere else in the world. It is also the habitat of hairy willow-herb, purple loosestrife and angelica.

The area also houses specific animals, such as the field vole and the rare root vole. They rarely show themselves. Timidity also characterises the beaver, which, since its return in 1988 seems to feel at home again in the National Park.

Some of the most timid animals are a number of bird species. Bluethroat, bittern, purple heron, spoonbill, night heron and corncrake avoid humans and prefer to keep themselves hidden. Birds of prey are increasing in number. If you are very lucky, you may see a white-tailed eagle high in the sky above certain types of terrain. In spite of the presence of visitors, for many birds the Biesbosch is an important area for foraging and nesting. Hundreds of thousands of people come to the Biesbosch each year.

The area is large enough to be able to enjoy the silence. For those who prefer not to walk, there are sightseeing boats or quiet 'whisper' boats. Information about the National Park can be obtained from the Bezoekerscentrum [visitors' centre] De Hollandse Biesbosch. Experiencing 'de Biesbosch Symfonie' - a spectacular audio-visual show on 8 projection screens -, from 2002 the visitor can imagine himself to be in the heart of the country. For children there is also much to see and do in the centre. They can have great fun in the educational exhibition with the many 'do'-elements.

Under the supervision of knowledgeable guides, walks and trips by boat start from here throughout the year. The Beaver observatory is also an important element, where the typical Biesbosch 'residents' can be observed while the observer remains unseen.

Prachtige foto, kon zo een stilleven op doek zijn. Alleen beetje spijtig dat het huis er gedeeltelijk op staat, zou mooier geweest zijn zonder, maar ja, wie ben ik, hee...

I like all the pictures you have done like this, from the other side of the river, offering a nice place dominated by the trees and with a subtile subject like the boat here.

Een hele mooie Biesbosch capture hier weer, Jaap. Perfect geframed met alleen maar de voorgevel van het oude pand. De patronen van de kale takken zijn fijn, de gerimpelde refelcties in het water heerlijk en het warme licht maakt het af. Erg goed werk!

Excellent atmosphere. The cooper tones contrasting with the blue ones are very pleasant. Also like the crop on the house showing the necessaryu details of it and letting wonder in the calm image of the water reflections.
