Sandenburg Castle, Langbroek, the Netherlands
Shortly before 1400, and maybe even earlier, the building of Sandenburg Castle started. Sandenburg would become a major knights town within several years. The founder of the place was presumably a member of the Van Zijl family, which is often stated in official documents from that era as being the owner of ground in this neighbourhood.
In the area of the ‘Langbroekerwetering’ lots of towers have been built. Most of those towers have been safeguarded by water, most of the times they can only be entered through a door that leads to a room on the first floor. Most of these towers are still in this primitive state of ‘castle’. Some of them have grown into a somewhat more mature kind of castle, like Sandenburg. This castle has become a complex kind of building, in which we can’t even recognize the original tower anymore.
Shortly before 1800 the old castle was demolished and a new building arose on this same place, the building as we still know it nowadays. It consists of a large square shaped tower with on one side a wing with several rooms and on the other side a smaller tower. On both the large tower and the neighbouring wing we see smaller corner-towers. Sandenburg castle was rebuild in the so-called Neo-Tudor style, which we recognize in more Dutch castles stemming from that particular era. The building was plastered in white and looks remarkably fresh in its green surroundings of the gras and trees.

This castle is a fine one. It's laying on a road and a canal and I think it's only in winter time possible to made a good photo of it. I hope you like it.
