‘Amsterdam - No luck for the ‘Amsterdam’’
Within walking distance of the Central Railway Station of Amsterdam (behind the Science Center NEMO) you find the Netherlands Maritime Museum (Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum).
Next to this building you can see a replica of the ‘Amsterdam’, a magnificent 18th-century cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company.
Between 1985 and 1990 this replica was built by volunteers by only using tools that existed in the 18th century. The replica is accessible for visitors of the museum.
The picture was taken just before the last sun rays of the evening disappeared behind the clouds.
When I saw a sightseeing boat arriving, I wanted to draw attention to the stark contrast between the old ship and the modern but much smaller boat. Seeing the result afterwards, I can only note that the boat is simply almost unnoticed next to the majestic Amsterdam.
Why did the real Amsterdam had no luck?
Read the information I found on Wikipedia:
The maiden voyage of the ‘Amsterdam’ was planned from Texel (an island in North-Holland) to the settlement Batavia (in the present Indonesia).
On 15 November 1748 the ship made its first attempt but returned on 19 November 1748 due to an adverse wind.
The Amsterdam made a second attempt on 21 November 1748, which also failed and from which the ship returned on 6 December 1748.
The third attempt was made on 8 January 1749. But the Amsterdam was wrecked in a storm on the English Channel on 26 January 1749.
The shipwreck was discovered in 1969 in the bay of Bulverhythe, United Kingdom, and is sometimes visible during low tides.

It is a picturesque shot. You've got good moment to capture the colour of the clouds as background, which matches perfectly with the subject. Very well composed and good lighting.
Thank you very much for sharing.
Let us share our world to each other.

Bella condivisione e bella nota.

You're capturing well this a replica of 18th-century cargo ship by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the cargo ship of Great Navigation Age. As compared with the boat which anchors in front of cargo ship, its huge size is known well. It's impressive in high mast besides the big cargo body. The whole is harmonized and balanced well by a good arrangement and beautiful color combination.

This ship looks really outstanding at your pic! Perfectly seen and presented with a lovely special lighting on it and the surroundings. Love the pastel mood of your image. Well done!

Complimenti! Un eccellente lavoro.
Ciao e buon inizio di settimana

Impressive ship in lovely warm tone light. Yes this ship is quite famous, being on such a visible location. But I didn't know the history of (or had forgotten) it.
Thanks for a reminder!

Good evening Paul,
I remember this ship and the maritime-museum there, visited in 2/2002.
Fine golden light over the galeon, also know the story about, and especially impressed with the statue on her bow: I think it is a mermaid, not seen on pic. here.

Heel mooi gepresenteerd, bedankt.
Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen met 31.8° C.

Salut cher Paul
Such a magical shot, the light here is truly exquisite, turning the ship into a golden galleon. The reflections are equally beautiful and I like the white frame you used, it really accentuates the warm tones.
Thanks for sharing, bonne journee

i took the photo of this famous ship from the bottom, as we were passing by her with a canal cruise. the weather and lighting look very well. color temperature makes the sky look a bit green, but that might be my screen.

Oh what I'd give to go and see the actual ship at low tides in the UK...I bet that would be very very interesting and a sight to remember.
and its interesting too, that they built this replica with tools only from that era.
lovely shot with the lighting, its majestic and elegant.
SWEETFREEDOM (22724) 2013-06-22 22:17
beautiful light and colors, yes the old boats is so Majestic that the new one is almost unnoticed.

Imposing sailing ship, beautiful and colorful photo, fantastic light and composition
marina7 (8055) 2013-06-23 0:56
this sailing ship may be unlucky but its replica is absolutely beautiful here. Great postcard. And yes, the sightseeing boat looks almost like a part of the deck.
Love the sunlight here, so warm and delicate. Lovely colors.
Have a happy Sunday!

Royaldevon (29591) 2013-06-23 10:51
It was an unlucky vessel but I can't help noticing how magnificent it appears in comparison with the modern barge!
The low sun has done a fine job furnishing golden hues on the water, on the ship and on the facades of the nearby building. A delightful photograph in its colours and its sharp details.
My warm regards,
jjcordier (76350) 2013-06-23 23:03
mcmtanyel (13463) 2013-06-26 13:03
This is a magnificent ship. The color and light management of your photo are excellent. The composition of your photo is very pleasant, too. However, to address your comment on the sightseeing boat, I think if you had waited a bit until the little boat passed the the Amsterdam (by even a tad bit), it would be more noticeable in the photo. Of course, I wasn't there and do not know if there is another obstacle further downstream, similar to the pier on the right. Overall, this is a very high quality picture and I would not worry too much about the sightseeing boat. Your photo still manages to show how it is dwarfed by the Amsterdam.
Cricri (106327) 2013-07-04 11:32

One interesting note gives us enough background of history and the fate of the splendid boat, to which this reply shows his beauty and grandeur, is a beautiful ship and you've captured a sensational POV that sky so beautiful.
Very good the management of brightness and optimum sharpness, nice color range contributes to the success of the image.
Have a good evening.
abmdsudi (43530) 2013-07-08 9:17
There's a lot to attract the eye in this image including, the vibrant colours, the masts reaching out the wonderful blue sky, the golden light on side of the proud galleon and the shimmering water, what else can we ask for!! It's nicely composed shot and the history to go along, indeed this galleon really is something and you have got this one in a great setting, it captures the type of weather conditions in one glance and takes the eye all round the frame making her stands out so clearly and stunningly. This is a magnificant capture and your effort is well paid off. My congrats

I don't know how it happened I didn't give you any comment for this superb work!
Amazing colours like in oil painting. A ship is really magnificent and you with your professional skills show it in extraordinary way!!
Have a nice sunday evening!

Beautiful tall ship! Nicely captured with good pov and it has good dof with sharp details. I like the colors especially of the clouds and good lighting. Well done, tfs.
maloutim (9637) 2013-09-15 14:50
Good evening Paul,
A majestic ship captured in beautiful light conditions ! The golden rays of the sun have struck the ship, the sea, the buildings, and have given the sky this fine special blue tint.
Indeed the contrast is great between the old ship and the new boat !
Thanks for sharing.
ChrisJ (97920) 2013-09-21 2:42
Definitely a case of third time UNlucky! (with the wrecking). Eventually I suppose the wreck will be salvaged and placed in a museum. The Batavia was retrieved off the west Australian coast and what remains is now in the Fremantle shipwrecks museum near Perth. I was lucky enough to go see it so have some idea how great these ships were. Tfs!

jmdias (55415) 2013-10-11 1:44
very nice view of the old boat. I liked these details and the special golden light. Brazilians created a replica from the first Portuguese boat that arrived in brazil in 1500 but it was full of problems.
