Amsterdam is a wonderfully walkable city with most major sites located in or near the city center. Public transportation is excellent and driving is strongly discouraged within the canal ring. Of course biking is the preferred Dutch way to travel and some would say the only way to truly experience the city.
Bicycling in Amsterdam
Bicycling in Amsterdam is a way of life for most Dutch and still the best way to get around. There are dedicated bike paths throughout the city and few hills to conquer. A number of companies offer bicycle rentals for around €8 per day with discounts for longer rentals.
Nearly half of all traffic movements in Amsterdam are by bike. The Dutch are proud of their biking culture and can be seen pedaling rain or shine (although never with a helmet) through the city streets. Bike paths connect the entire country and cyclists are well respected on the roads, making cycling an efficient as well as healthy and environmentally friendly way to get around.
Public Transportation - GVB (www.gvb.nl) is the public transport company of Amsterdam providing integrated metro, tram and bus service throughout Amsterdam and its surrounding areas. 24-, 48- and 72-hour GVB passes allow for unlimited travel on all trams, buses, metros and night buses for the duration of the pass and provide the most economical way for visitors to explore the city. Passes can be purchased at one of the GVB Tickets & Info Offices located at all major train stations. In addition, 24-hour passes may be purchased from GVB drivers and conductors, as well as at most major hotels and the tourist office. Trams provide the best way to get around Amsterdam and run regularly until 12:15am.
Bridges of Amsterdam
Amsterdam has 90 islands, 160 canals, and 1281 bridges, and is therefore sometimes referred to as the “Venice of the North.” Some 80 bridges in the historical center of town are illuminated with soft, white light - creating the kind of picturesque scenery loved by tourists and locals alike.
However, the current system of lighting — cables and lightbulbs — is up for renovation, and Amsterdam wouldn’t be Amsterdam if someone, somewhere had not come up with a daring, controversial plan to do something different.
Amsterdam is one of the greatest small cities in the world. From its canals to world-famous museums and historical sights, Amsterdam is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe.
Amsterdam is also a city of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages of a big city: culture, nightlife, international restaurants, good transport - but is quiet, and largely thanks to its canals, has a little road traffic. In Amsterdam your destination is never far away, but get a bike for most authentic experience.(Source:amsterdam.info)

What Amsterdam is all about: bicycles, canals, bridges, boats, strolling. A great daily life image with good colours and sharpness.

How to get an idea of Amsterdam ? By looking at this typical scene ! Bicycles, colorful facades, the canal and the bridge... All is represented in a very good way.
Very appealing mood in that daily life shot.

Very attractive soft colours and also a good motive with the bridge and different vehicles.

good capture of this combination of walking and transport by boat, the most easy and relaxed ways to visit the city. I could add cycling but that is getting to agressive in town with people riding scrupulous and ringing there bells.

This looks like a smooth and tranquil way to travel! Much to be recommended!
I like how your angled capture of the bridge, links together the sides of the frame and encourages the eyes to follow the boat.
You have composed this well and captured a wealth of interesting details.

Good timing to catch both the cyclist going over the bridge & the boat going under it. Th semicircular arch makes a good focal point. Tfs!

Hello George, I like the tight crop of this composition, and yet you manage to fit in so many things that are typical of Amsterdam, it couldn't be anywhere else.
Tfs, regards Jean.

I like to see this traffic in the city. I think to go on small boats through the channels it is interesting.
Geneva Motor Show showed the latest models of automobiles price of which is very expensive but I see here and bicycles as a real environmental transport and certainly cheaper:)
Interesting shot and good details here

Hi my friend again
Very nice moment you catch here and very beautiful photo
Greg1949 (9011) 2009-03-09 7:00
George, this is a fine presentation. The shot is near perfect for it has that feeling of cold and damp just looking at it. The note is also first rate, it has been most of a lifetime since I was there and do not have enough first hand memories so these are fantastic. As for the shadow under the bridge, it seems that if one looks at it intently enough he eyes get accustomed to the dark just like in real life. Great capture.
TGULUMSER (13252) 2009-03-09 10:31
A nice moment from the daily life of Amsterdam. An excellent frame that contains the characteristic items of this city,
JCG (35129) 2009-03-15 9:55
To choose and if I lived in Holland I would opt for this mode of transportation, it must be nice to get to work by boat! But the bicycle is the means of transport most used as you can see on your photo. Well seen George, thank you.
With all my friendships and a very good evening,
