Photographer's Note

Located beside the IJsselmeer, opposite the future polder of Markerwaard, Hoorn is one of the most typical ports on the old Zuiderzee, mainly devoted now to boating for pleasure.
This picture is taken in the old harbour; you see houses on the "Veermanskade": this quay is lined with a fine collection of restored houses. For the most part old merchants' houses, they have façades typical of Hoorn with carved wooden pillars. Some, which have fine stones on their façades, are topped with stepped or bell-shaped gables.
