Photographer’s Note

per coloro che vivono nella zona mediterranea dell'Europa, Halloween non singifica granche' - a parte la solita kermesse di marketing e pubblicita' di importazione statunitense.
Halloween si celebra nella notte tra il 31 ottobre e il primo novembre e il nome sembra derivare dall'antico inglese "Eallra Hālgena ǣfen", divenuto poi "All Hallows' Even", "la vigilia del giorno di tutti i santi".
secondo certi studiosi la festa di Halloween deriverebbe da un'antica festivita' celtica, Samhain, che sanciva piu' o meno la fine dell'estate: i celti credevano che il confine tra questo mondo e l'aldila' fosse piu' sottile durante Samhain, permettendo a spiriti buoni e cattivi di attraversarlo.
l'usanza di incidere delle zucche e di usarle come lanterne la sera di Halloween probabilmente deriva dalla tradizione scozzese e irlandese di mettere delle candele o delle lanterne ricavate da rape o barbabietole sul davanzale della finestra, in onore dei propri morti.
negli ultimi anni Halloween e' diventato purtroppo sempre piu' sinonimo dell'ennesima trovata dei cervelli del marketing per vendere qualsiasi tipo di cibo, gadget o film legato anche lontanamente a questa antica tradizione.

for those, like me, coming from a Mediterranean country, Halloween doesn't mean much - apart from the usual swamp of chocolates, gadgets, movies of US import. especially here in Northern Europe Hallowen night means a series of non-stop horror movies on TV - anything related to witches, zombies or - even - stuff like "the Texas chain-saw massacre"...
the word Halloween comes from the Old English "Eallra Hālgena ǣfen", which became later "All Hallows' Even", or "Eve of" All Saints' Day" (November 1st).
some folklorists think that the festival has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain, during which the ancient Celts believed that the border between this world and the Otherworld became thin, allowing both good and bad spirits to pass through.
the tradition of carving lanterns out of pumpkins derives probably from another tradition, that of carving lanterns (in the shape of a face) out of turnips to place them on window sills, in honour of the departed, on All Hallows' Even.

Ciao Cri. Già, quando ero ragazzo io non se ne parlava proprio di questa festa. Poi sull'onda della fortunata serie di film..... La foto è simpatica forse a rischio bannamento. Speriamo di no. Dolcetto o scherzetto?

Parlando della festa anchio non la considero nostra , e non mi fa nessun effetto cristina , la tua foto invece è di grande effetto , brava per il taglio e la gestione della luce .

Grazie, Cristina, per questa immagine incandescente che mi riporta in un balzo alla mia vita americana e a tutti gli Halloween vissuti con un marito made in Usa. Tempo che fu, giorni felici divorati da una malattia bestiale. Stop.
Trovo che la tua foto, così particolare, sia davvero bella.

Finally i see a big one..it has to be a big one..there is no implication of scale but i am disappointed looking at small pumpkins..

Gosh what is it with me and large pumpkins..it not what you think it is LOL :))

I once had a theme dedicated for the attraction of red, but during TE's time of becoming null and I couldn't add any more photographes, I removed the theme with all its content. If I still had the theme, I would be pleased to add this one...
Light in the pumpkin-head presents a lovely red for the funny smiley :)

Hello Cris, Yes it is that time of year again, I was really surprised on my last visit to Italy to find how this American festival seemed to be so well embraced there, at least in Treviso it appeared to be, I guess I was even more surprised because we in Australia, a land of everything American, don't bother with it a great deal. Beautiful pumpkin, not scary at all, magnificent radiation of light & warmth. Not my type of music but I do recall the American group Smashing Pumpkins, suitable title, maybe it also has a reference to what we should to this tradition, scherzo & celebrate i morti ma anche tutti i Santi ;-))). I also found your note interesting & informative, Thank you.
