Maastricht - de Markt.
Nell'Olanda del Nord il carnevale non si festeggia - cerchereste invano manifestazioni e sfilate qui ad Amsterdam.
Nella parte meridionale del paese invece, e piu' precisamente nel Limburg, il carnevale e' una cosa seria. I festeggiamenti iniziano la domenica e vanno avanti per tre giorni, concludendosi il martedi grasso. Per cui oggi ho preso il treno e sono andata a Maastricht, a quasi tre ore da Amsterdam, per rivivere un po' di quella atmosfera carnevalizia che riporta alla mente tanti ricordi d'infanzia.
Qui siamo nella piazza principale di Maastricht, il Markt, dove confluiscono i carri e le associazioni che sfilano per il centro della citta' al suono di bande e di musica di tutti i tipi. Sarebbe riduttivo pero' descrivere il carnevale di Maastricht solo come un'insieme di carri e costumi - in realta' tutta la cittadinanza partecipa travestendosi nei modi piu' fantasiosi e divertenti, famiglie intere indossano costumi a tema, giovani, anziani, disabili, tutti sfoggiano qualcosa di carnevalesco. E la birra scorre a fiumi...

if you want to experience a carnival atmosphere, do not stay in Amsterdam these days - take the train and go South, to Limburg. This is what I did this morning - it's almost 3 hours by train, but if you miss the chaos, the colours, the fun of carnival it will be worth the trip.
Maastricht is the capital of Limburg and hosts the largest of the carnival celebrations in this region, which start on Sunday and continue until Tuesday.
I took this photo on the central square in Maastricht, the Markt, which is where the floats, bands, groups and associations in costumes gather at the end of the parade.
It would be reductive however to describe the Maastricht Carnival only as a gigantic parade - in reality all the city participates by dressing (often cross-dressing) and wearing colourful masks and costumes: families, friends, students associations, old, young, disabled - everybody joins in the celebrations and has fun (or so it seems), while beer flows and flows...
