Photographer’s Note

This is Beth Chaim the oldest Jewish cemetery in the new world, founded in 1659 by the sefardic jewish seddlers who came to Curaçao on the run from Portugal after a stop in Amsterdam. The old part contains graves from the 17th century and the cemetrery is expanded in the 19th century when the Jewish community propered.
Around the natural harbour called 'het Schottegat' a lot of industrie has settled with the Shell refinery as its largest expaonent. The Shell sold its refineries in 1975 to the Isla, a Venuzuelan oil-company. The Shell has expanded over the years so the cemetery is now an enclave in a huge industrial area.
