Terschelling is an island in the northern Netherlands, one of the West Frisian Islands. The island in its current shape was formed in the Middle Ages from a sandy area called De Schelling in the west and the original island Wexalia in the east. The oldest traces of civilisation on Terschelling date from around 850, when a small wooden church was built on a hill.

In 1666 Terschelling was ransacked by the English. The English fleet originally planned to attack the Dutch merchant fleet which was moored near the coast of Vlieland, the next island to the west. When the Dutch vessels retreated towards Terschelling, the English followed, destroyed 150 Dutch vessels, and landed in the harbour of West-Terschelling. The town was burnt to the ground by the English on this occasion which would become known as "Holmes's Bonfire" after the English admiral Holmes. The burning of London in the very same year was considered by some as God's revenge. The next year, in 1667, the Dutch under command of De Ruyter executed a retaliatory expedition, and dealt the English navy a heavy blow at the Raid on the Medway (also known as the Battle of Chatham), in effect ending the Second Anglo-Dutch War.

The island is known for being one of the few places in Western Europe where cranberries grow. In 1840, a barrel of cranberries, apparently packed by sailors as an antiscorbutic, washed ashore on the island's coast, and the islanders cultivated them for their own sailors. Nowadays, the cranberry fields cover 0.48 km². The cranberries are mainly sold to tourists and used by the island's restaurants and bakeries, who compete continually with each other to make the tastiest cranberry delicacies.

Here we see the harbour of West-Terschelling, the largest village and the administrative center of the island. The lighthouse named Brandaris after St. Brendan dates from 1594 and as such is the oldest lighthouse of the Netherlands. It is still operational.

Hi Alexander,
beautiful image of the place with excellent POV and good placement of the lighthouse,
the red roofs of the houses make the picture still more beautiful and colorful,
Greetings,
Dimitris.

Hello Alexander,

Well, I have learned a lot about our history of which I was unaware! I've always felt that we had good relationships with the Dutch! Oh, dear! We cannot change history!

I love this shot for its fine composition, nice off-centre focal point and beautiful, warm colours. It would look fine in my living room!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Alexander,
Fijne dag, Henk

Hi Alexander, beautiful view, from an excellent POV and with good quality, timing and beautiful colours.
Perfect composition too.
thanks, ciao

Hello Alexander,
A good view over the red rooftops towards the contrasting blue sea and sky. I like also the placing of the tower from which the eyes can sweep round the curving coastline into the far distance. Very good light, colours and clarity. Interested to read about the cranberries.

Very interesting note about some Dutch/English history about which I was unaware. Interesting reference to the Great Fire of London, as 1666 is a date most people in the UK remember from history lessons. Devine retribution as you say maybe!
Good wide angle shot of the island; we can see right across to the boats moored in the harbour. The lighthouse is well placed in the frame (It looks to be a way from the sea)and makes a good focal point over-seeing the other buildings. Well done
Kath

Alexander, this is one of the most interesting notes I have read in months, with its reference to fires, botany and lighthouses.
It's a strange location for a lighthouse, but it fits in well with your gentle panorama of the town. The most charming aspect of this is the delightful array of red rooftops interspersed with trees. You seem to have got the sharpness and colour saturation just right. I can imagine this scene being painted many times by artists.
Seemingly simple, but carefully composed and cropped to be very appealing.
Regards,
Andrew

hello Alexander,
I like a lot the red roofs among the green trees, goes well with your story about the cranberries :) the gentle curve of the bay creates a relaxed feeling of a smooth motion, and the lighthouse is a great accent to this peaceful scene. excellent work, my compliments.

with best regards,
Kristine

Hi Alexander,
I like this views of the coast to the sea with typical elements. This is a typical one to the North Sea with the dunes and houses with red roofs. A good composition by the tower and large curve of the beach behind in a clear capture of good colours.

Hello Alexander,

Goed foto werk, bedankt!

Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John.

Nice light here, Alexander, and effective compo with the tower on the side, cutting the long horizon line and "piercing the clouds". Regards, Daniel
