The Goliath
It's not fair...a battle he can't win.
His more powerful brothers have taken over the place. Wind energy is the magic word, and they stand in numbers all spread along the Dutch coastline.
This one is taken in the north along the dike near Eemshaven where modern wind turbines standing high in the landscape and together without his older brother The Goliath they make nice compositions in the landscape.
The Goliath is re-build in 1897 after a big fire.

First test shots with the 1Ds mkIII.
Taken with the 300m/m with 2 x extender attached. No crop, only made it to a square Hasselblad (no i don't buy such a thing) frame with removing a part from the left side. Maybe later i post another one from the Goliath in warm sunny evening light taken about a hour before this one.

Now he is David. Or Don Quixote, maybe. Or some such mixed up references. That's quite a composition, Henk. I have to say, looking at the sun, it seems overprocessed somehow. The sharp edges. Not sure what that's from. Not something I'd expect to see in one of your posts. Anyway . . . Nice camera. Maybe I'll sell my apartment and buy one. Best, -Hugh

What to say about your new toy ?:)Wish you many great pictures with that as you did before :)Congratulations
Typical view from there :)
I wonder if this sun is the sun which I see daily, your seems so huuuge :)

Hello Henk,

a marvelous shot, like it a lot

best regards Bernd

Hi Henk,
The biggest sun I've seen for ages. Good combination of old and new windmills. Here in Finland we almost never see sunsets like that. Because clean air doesn't give so much filtering, sun overexposes. Dusty April makes an exception.
Kari

Hello Henk. Indeed a worth seeing motive. It explains itself. You realized it photographically adequately. Really fantastically. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Henk,
You're a double lucky guy. Why ? First, because you are the happy owner of a great equipment, and second, but most important, you can use it as a genious would!

Hi Henk,
I got the news via my backstage canals... congratulations my friend, a guy like you deserves such a big toy and I wish you lots of fun and success with it !
That's a nice image to begin with, 200% dutch and I imagine the flowering tulips on the ground ;-) Nice silhouetttes aroud the warm setting sun, this rendering of the big globe is what retains my attention, the transition from red to yellow is very smooth and rich in tone details, even though there might be a bit too much yellow for my taste...
Have a nice day JY

woww......... wonderful sunset.. superb orange color and light,, i like these old windmill and modern. really good test with your ne 1D>> bravo
take care
francine

I have been dreaming for a sun and sunset like this for quite a long time. Many thanks for fulfilling part of the dream, which is looking at your picture.
For the modern wind mills, they are ugly and the presence of the beautiful old version makes the thing worse. This is my sincere opinion. I do understand the challenge of the new technology and the needs of energy but aesthetically it is not nice at all.
Antonio

hi Henk..
indeed a very clever framing, nice opposition of styles..and good use of big 300mm! (extended!)
nice colors..
"only made it to a square Hasselblad (no i don't buy such a thing)"..i think you have very good stuff, don't you??:-)

nice picture..

concerning the compo, i will just say something unuseful because i'm sure you did the best, but some meters on the left, in order to isolate the windmill frankly between the wind turbines.

Hi Henk,
amazing to see the technical progress and the contrast of old and new, although the old mill was constructed for another scope..
As always, you got a perfect quality in every aspect, congratulations for your new toy also :)

Looking at the pic I can also imagine a version with 1/40 sec and a light wind to see the rotor blades move...
Compliments, Chris

Hi Henk
Superb!
the big sun, the little windmill and the moder thin and taller ones makes a great motive!

A very original image mixing old and new. The silhouettes are great and the warm colours of the sky are very attractive. Nice one.

hi henk
even though i am not a big fan of sunset , i must admit that this one is quite interesting,

warm color and silhouette works well together, as well as the contrast of the old windmill and the wind turbine.

Wow, what a stunning shot, the overall color and definition, especially with the huge sun, are excellent, and of course the idea, the framing... fantastic work.

Cheers
A

It's amazing how you can get the sun in the shot without the tiniest bit of over-exposure, especially as it is so large thanks to the extremely long focal length. It also fits perfectly between the stands of the turbines. The contrast between those and the "Goliath" couldn't be more stark; two different ages. They will have to do some re-naming around there. Good work with the new aquisition.

Hoi Henk,
Fantastische foto, bedankt!
Groeten,
Lars

Hi Henk,
I guess the Goliath is the chunky traditional windmill supplanted (and dwarfed) by his younger brothers (although as Davids they should perhaps have been smaller as well as more technological!). Anyway it's a fantastic job you've done here with your new toy. I like the contrast between traditional and modern and the way both the sun and the windmill are perfectly framed within the vertical lines of the turbine columns. This would be a perfect image to represent alternative energy sources, both wind and sun. But it’s the sun that really steals the show here, a spectacular ball of fire sinking towards the horizon. Very impressive.

Test shot, eh? Be interested to see what you come up with when you really start trying with the new camera. :)

There are so many things to like about this image. Photographically it is pure joy to look at. Composition, color, framing and all that other sorta photo stuff is great.

Its metaphorical content about energy is most intriguing. There is the new, the old and the ultimate. The modern windmills are the new. The Goliath is the old. And, of course, the sun behind them all is the ultimate source of all energy on earth. Great metaphor!

Framing the sun between the two modern windmill uprights is photo perfection!

Hello Henk
splendid image with wonderful perspective and POV
great one
congrats

hello Henk
I have to give you a critique, but "critique" is a wrong word! What could I critique there, everything is more than perfect!Colours, point of view,framing,contrats...Marvelous!I like the great clarity of the sky,it's superb! You can enjoy with your new camera!

Hoi Henk,

Mooi mooi mooi!

Groeten!

Hello Henk,

What a splendid sunset ! The composition is really perfect ! We can fell her the power of the big wind mills in contraste with this little mill ! The colour of the sky is amazing and that give very good silhouette in this picture !
Very well done !

Hi Henk,

incredible scene, lovable at the first sight. You found interesting elements for the silhouettes against the powerful Sun. The square format fits pretty well. A pleasant one! Congratulations for your new (and expensive) acquisition :)

Hoi Henk,
See you soon,
Fulvio.

O M G !!!!!!! This is f@$%@$#%g I'm out of words to praise this shot. Like they say in Spinal Tap... 'this goes to 11'
It has everything, superb colors, contrast, concept, placement, symmetry...
Salut,
E

Hallo Henk,
most of the competitions would be show him as the winner. Only height and power would be a loss. Also four of them do not catch the eye in such way as he does. The background one does not count.
Warm impression, good contrast of content, well added by the sun. So we will see what else you achieve with such a new help. And not to forget that all four complete in the frame are just good.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Dag Henk,

ps. i wish for some human scale factor in there to appreciate the size of these things. but alas, cannot have everything.

Hi Henk

I only associated these big sunsets with the African Safari, not somewhere in the Netherlands. Perfect capture to get the sun wedged between the two turbines, and the sun itself is holding perfect detail, not burning out whatsoever. Fantastic reds and yellows and silhouettes also.
Regards
Jim

Henk,
different and great shot. The combination of the old windmill with the new windmills, but now with the purpose to get energy and not necessarily to dry up the land and additionally the supradimensional sun as the generator is a terrific composition.
Just yesterday I was looking through your intro and wondering about your extensors. I never had realized any shots of yours where you used it and here it is now. 300mm + extendor and WOW there you have a HUGE sun will fitted inbetween tow windmills. i wonder how far you must have been of all these subjects to achieve that compression.
... and who is Goliath? You, the sun, the modern mills, your lens or your new full frame camera? I like the Hasselblad format - and yes - you "don't buy such thing" because it is just to expensive.
With your new monster baby I will feel with my little D200 like David in the Canadian Rockies :-)
Peter

Bonsoir Henk

hello Henk,

looking at this photo it feels as if the blades of the newer windmills will start spinning next second and with slice both the fiery sun and the Goliath, their shapes remind me some agile and predaroty insects. the timing for this shot is above excellent, there must be some magic at work to get all elements just in the right places :) superb work, no question about that.

and my congratulations on the new toy :) I can share your excitement safe in the knowledge that I will not be buying new camera any time soon, since any upgrade from my beloved d200 also means a heavier thing, while d200 + some of the lenses are pretty much the limit of what I can carry. I had borrowed Kristaps' scary Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens for a day in a botanical garden (no tripods), and the next day I could barely lift my arms. TOO HEAVY, way too heavy. why do the camera manufacturers forget that among the boys there are few girls that like DSLRs and fast lenses? :(

take care,
Kristine (off to gym to get some muscles in my arms)

Henk,
Wow, you caught amazing graphics from the shadowed foreground.
Long focal decrease perspective effects, and it is so nice here... Great job !
Regards,
JB.

Hi, Henk -

Don't think of him as Goliath, but as a valiant warrior passing the torch on to a new generation of soldiers. After all, unlike Goliath, the windmill is on the side of the good guys!

Great composition, with the sun perfectly positioned, as are the clouds. A lot of thought went into this one!

Best,

Dag, Henk.

Mooi gezien beste vriend, bedankt.

Hi Henk,
I`m still on my trip, but I fortunetly found a free Internet access, so I thought you need to have a look at Henk`s new pictures and what should I say? WONDERFUL! Great shot of the sunset, all the windmills and the old one in the middle, great composition. Wonderful colors, great, great shot!
PS: Congrats to your new camera, must be a wonderful one! My dream camera, but much to expensive and I don`t need such a good camera, even if I would have about 7000 $ more in my pocket. But for a pro like you it must be the perfect camera, even better than the Nikon D3 if you ask me.

Hi Henk
Congrats for your new toy which will stay outside of my reach for quite a long time.
I like the contrast between the old and the new, with the old almost going away, most of the time. The setting sun is well placed and adds drama to the fight between two eras.

Now I know why you do not have good light on your trips, it is because Holland has the best sun all around and the others can not compete.:-))

I notice you will make a comeback to Canada next August, wish you a good stay here and good light and a few clouds.Should you ever come east, give a call.

Hi Henk,

I did read your note for the second time, but also every comments you've received as well. By doing so, I already learned something much valuable, concerning the 1/100 for every 100mm... These are the kind of technical knowledge I still have to learn. I'm just trying not to be too intimidated by this overload of tips and tricks, otherwise I will loose the small amount of spontaneity I have.

This weekend, I've studied the work of Richard Avedon and just in there, it's a masterclass in itself, from an artistic point of view. I'm just trying to improve technically and artistically at the same time, as we need both aspect to be able to achieve what we have in mind.

I'm also happy for you that everybody approve your new toy, underlining that it will be in the best possible hands. Judging by this shot alone, the MarkIII already seems to influence your way of looking at things. Maybe you have thought about doing such a shot previously, but once you have your new baby, then it becomes an additional motivation to push the envelop.

I'm just like the other ones and I'm very impressed by the result, specially the sun's proportion, but I can only guess that this is what happens when you shoot it with a 600m... It offer a similar result as if using a telescope...

Great warm tones here, poster shot should I say (with the size of your file, no doubt these megapixels could do the job without effort). There's only one Goliath in your shot and it's you... :-P)

Cheers!

André

Hi Henk,
An interesting POV with sun, old and new windmills. The colours are fantastic, too. Well done...
Friendly regards...

Hello Henk!
Wow, that`s a great picture. The old windmill, the modern windmills and the huge sun.
Excellent work!
Greetings

Dag Henk,
I am wainting for Goliath under the sun.... but in the meantime, let me tell you that this photo is absolutely wonderful (well, is it still necessary to tell you after so many comments?)
Then, I will make it short : proficiat!
Met vriendelijke groetjes,
Marianne

Bonjour Henk
The square format works very well for this compo where all the elements are well positioned. love to see the silhouetted windmills, the sun perfectly and naturally framed in between the huge structures. I completely agree with the use of the wind energy...
All the best from France

Fantastic Henk, I love these kind of shots where the size of the Sun is exaggerated through tele extension. The scene and elements in it are powerful. Very well done..

Finding three things in alignment--now that's a great choice of POV! Not just the old and new windmills, but also that giant sun that appears to be holding two of the windmills apart. We photographers never tire of placing the old against the new, in some new kind of way, because it always gives an image some "punch." Nice! Regards, Ken.

Hello Henk,

At FL300mm and F/8, the FG and the sun in the distant is amazingly sharp. I like the composition here with the new windmill superimposed on the old.

Regards
Alfred

Hi Henk
Excellent composition with the old windmill against the new ones. Great capture of the Sun, perfect light.
Have a nice day.

Hello Henk,

The view is powerful with such a beautiful saturation of oranges colours. As for the wind towers, mixed feelings. I don't think they have the same charm and beauty as older windmills, and of course their purpose is different. During my second visit to Poland I notice how many of these things have been erected in fields everywhere. I had to drive and/or walk a little extra everytime to avoid having them in my images. Your image is excellent though and you made very good use and contrast of the two structures. The new and the old side by side in this beautiful image. Thanks Henk.

Roberto

Wow this is stunning Henk!
Great effect with the large sun and the old mill seeming to be placed between the new ones.
Beautiful work

Bonjour Henk,

Hello Henk. I think this image is lovely showing two different era's in one sunset. The bottom section of the sun is also interesting to see. A marvelous image showing the beauty of our world and the creative hands of man.
