Sassenpoort
This is de Sassenpoort in the city of Zwolle, the capital of the province of Overijssel.
Zwolle was founded around 800 by Frisian merchants, The name comes from Suolle, that means 'hill'. The city is built on a hill and located between three rivers, de IJssel, de Vecht and het Zwarte Water. Just as Deventer, Zwolle was a member of the Hanseatic League.
Nowadays Zwolle is one of the most import cities in the northern and eastern parts of the Netherlands and has about 111,000 citizens. The city is half way between the railway connection Amsterdam and Groningen.
I took this picture after I had been in Deventer, about twenty minutes by train from Zwolle. As you can see, it had become better weather.
De Sassenpoort (Sassen Gate) is one of the most import city gates in the Netherlands. It was built between 1406-1407 as a part of the defensive works of the city. It is only the inside gate that remains, the outside gate was demolished in 1839.
I hope you like this picture!

Very nice gate, I like that houses attatched to the gate. The composition is good and that leaves on the upper right corner are useful to understand the dimenssions. I know it's quite common in the Netherlands to see people cycling everywhere, but the one of the picture gives a romantic touch to the enviroment.
Nice job!

Very impressive gate with excellent architecture and in a very good condition. Your shot is very nice with good colours lighting and sharpness. The action in front of the gate and the leaves in the upper part create a wonderful composition. Well done Lars!

Hi Lars, I like your angle in taking this well composed picture. I like the tree leaves frame and the blue beautiful sky. The ancient architecture is clearly shown in this picture as well as the modern daily life of the city: people walk, ride, drive. It looks that this gate area is still an important place to be. A very clean, deep, and well contrast photo.

Hi Lars. The portrait vertical framing here is really the way to with this kind of building being so slender and tall. I like the cyclist, the pedestrians and the rich colors. This looks like a beautiful place to visit. Well seen and well shot Lars!

Hi Lars!
Another fine shot - clear and sharp. I like to see the structure of this historical building as much as the little white house next to the gate. A nice contrast!
Cheers, Thorsten

Hi Lars,
Weer zo'n mooie stadfoto van je. De Zwollenaren zullen toch wel zoveel gevoel voor humor hebben dat hier een bordje staat "Niet tegen sassen" i.p.v. "Niet tegen plassen"?

Hej Lars,
A nice massive tower gate you show us today, I like here the rising perspective, I suggest you some minor adjustments in the WS.
Have a nice week end,

Goed weekend,
Groeten John.

Hi Lars,
A very impressive building and expertly recorded. Including the buildings on both sides help to stablize this tall structure so are the branches at the top. Well considered!! Regards.

Good morning Lars. I much like your POV here, whereby you combine the street action with the wonderful architecture. The figure on the bicycle is quite captivating and it appears like studentss walking along while reading. A very natural, pleasing capture. Well done.

Hi Lars, nice photo and perspective of this very impressive castlelike gate. Nice to have included some tree banches in the upper corner, it adds some balance and fill the otherwise empty place occupied by the sky. The people are a nice addition and give some idea about the scale of the gate. Even the adjacent houses seems be dwarfed by the this massive construction. Well captured!

It looks somewhat strange today without anything around it to show that it is a gate. It looks more like a tower plopped down in this neighborhood. It certainly dwarves that little building that runs up against it. I like the flow that your point of view allows. Following the lines and street patterns it's easy to flow right around this gate and through the entire image, but always around and back to the gate. It's nice and sharp with good textures, especially the bricks of the gate. Nicely taken.

The contrat between the old "building" and the modern "life" is very well composed : especially with the small houses, the car, the walking people and the... roadsign !
A strange but funny ensemble.

Un monument très imposant au milieu de la ville. Les tons brique et les toits d'ardoise sont beaux à voir. Bien vu !

Hello Lars,
This is amazing!
Not the structure itself but the fact they got the idea of building a city gate like this!
Good details are captured in this special piece of architecture, the image is well composed and a good documentary!
Greetings,

Very impressive door, a bit lonely without the walls on the sides (which I supposed were dismantled when the city started to extend) but the pointy roofs looks great.
All the best,
Emmanuel
