Photographer’s Note
The Gold Office was built in 1635 and was then called the House Collection. It was a tax office. The name comes from the period 1814-1887. When the building was used as a Guarantee Agency Gold and Silver Works. There were gold and silver objects and inspected by a merkje provided. Since that time the building has had many functions, including before, during and after the war as a maritime museum, tourist office, after which the construction of the new city hall, which is now demolished, served as stadjer house or information desk for the city of Groningen.
The Gold Office was built in Holland with remarkable Renaissance-style facades. The building did Groninger early 17th century architecture. Remarkable are the shell-shaped motifs above doors and windows suspected of a sculptor from Bremen come. Later, early last century, the building was owned by the municipality of Groningen, the province immediately weapon in the facade had replaced by the arms of Groningen.
Since there has long competition between big city and woodland, the property transfer was a personal victory of the Groningen city council on the Ommel Anders.
After a thorough architectural restoration of eighteen years, the property in its present form as a cafe-restaurant decorated. The designs on the walls are original 17th century and were mainly in southern Scandinavia, the German coast and the Netherlands (the Hanseatic region). This type of decoration was often used instead of tiles and tapestries.
The colors on the outside of the Gold Office (red, ocher, gold and blue) are color by examining the paint residue on the stone set, which we assume to know that this must have been the original colors.
The Latin motto on the facade of the Gold Office: Date-Caesari quae Caesaris-literally: Give to Caesar what is Caesar's. This saying from the time of collecting the taxes, we still believe in, which we, with a nod to the guest as Emperor trying to treat.
