Almere Centrum

After the island of Texel with her old villages, I’m now going to one of the youngest municipalities in The Netherlands: Almere in the province of Flevoland. Here you can see a detail of the railway station Almere Centrum.

This picture is a cooperation between me and my father, Rob, his picture of the whole station can you see here.

The railway station Almere Centrum was built in 1987, when Almere was connected to the Dutch railway system. Since 2004, Almere has five railway stations, the other ones are Almere Buiten, Almere Muziekwijk, Almere Parkwijk and Almere Oostvaarders.
Almere Centrum was designed by the young architect Peter Kilsdonk, who goes with the High Tech idea in architecture. He also designed the railway stations in Oss, Lelystad, Zaandam, Doetinchem and two other railway stations in Almere.
The stations has four tracks and is a part of the Flevolijn between Lelystad, the capital of Flevoland and Weesp in Noord-Holland, near Amsterdam.

Almere is built in the south-west of the Flevopolder. This polder is located in the middle of the country on the place of the former Zuiderzee. After a flood in 1916 it was decided that de Zuiderzee would be closed and reclaimed. This resulted in the Noordoostpolder (Northeast Polder), Oostelijk Flevoland (Eastern Flevoland) and Zuidelijk Flevoland (Southern Flevoland), which together makes up the province Flevoland. The project was completed in 1968.
The oldest part of the city of Almere is Almere Haven (Almere Harbour), that dates from 1976. Nowadays, Almere is one of the fastest growing cities in The Netherlands and will probably enter the top 5 biggest cities very soon. At this time the city has about 175,000 inhabitants.

I took this picture on a very bright day, maybe too bright.
Hope you like it!
