Photographer's Note

Monaco Cathedral has housed various organs in the gallery above the narthex since it was first constructed. The first was installed in 1887. This was replaced by a larger organ 1922 to 1968, owned by Emile Bourdon. The current organ is a massive French-style 60-stop organ built in 1975 by organ makers Boisseau from Poitiers. This organ has 4840 pipes controlled by four keyboards.

This organ did not last that long and was completely overhauled in 1987. Restoration work was entrusted to Tamburini in Crema (Italy), commissioned by the Prince's Government and the National Commission of Organs to ensure that the Cathedral had an organ worthy of it. The restored organ was inaugurated on 29th May 1988 by Philippe Lefebvre, titular organist of Notre-Dame in Paris and by René Saorgin, titular organist of Monaco Cathedral.

Monaco now hosts the 'International Organ Festival', star of which is the cathedral organ, claimed to be the finest and most successful of the Cote d'Azur. From September to June, every Sunday at 10, the Mass is sung by 'Les Petits Chanteurs de Monaco and La Maîtrise de la Cathédrale' (Small Singers of Monaco and Master of the Cathedral) and accompanied by the organ.

Hello Barbara,
I love that contrast between the architecture of this ancient cathedral and the modern style organ lit up with neon purple colour like some nightclub illumination ! You could be expecting that the lights go flashing when the organ plays ! Perfect framing and light management. Well done.

I would think this photo was taken in HDR!
the lighting in the underside of the arches is remarkable, i wouldn't think you'd be able to capture that light without HDR.
a beautiful and technically sound photo. the sharpness is superb and really shows itself well.

Hi Barbara,
The modern Organ on a balcony, with fabulous violet light & colors, looks as an electronically operated aparatus. Hope it sounds like the old traditional pipes organ. Yet, a beautifully placed on the balcony, emmiting fabulous color.

Enthralling colours, with the glow and shine of the organ being a sharp contrast to the clear, saturated brown of the walls on either side.
The tall columns and the clear sharp details of the walls makes the photograph compact in its composition.
The prominent archways and columns on left and right & the tall arch over the organ unifies the scene and makes it more beautiful.
