In July two months ago I was on the Crystal Serenity. The cruise ship was sailing directly into winds announced by the bridge as being 38 knots (70 km/hr). I stepped out onto the promenade deck to shoot some photos. The view was from roughly 20 meters above the sea; the waves, I would estimate, were up to 7-8 meters (over 20 feet) high. Accompanying the waves was the thick ocean spray, droplets whipped up by the howling winds. The late afternoon sun, I thought, was unusually effective in illuminating the spray.
The location of the Serenity was off the coast of Malta, where rough seas do sometimes occur. Close to two thousand years ago the Apostle St. Paul is known to have shipwrecked off Malta, and survived. But many sailors of the past were not quite so lucky. The conditions were truly miserable, and I was afraid that, if I got closer to the bannister, I could have ended up in the water. I took only 5-6 shots. Two other photos were comparable in drama and in exposure quality. Years ago I had painted the image of an angry sea that was astonishingly close in structure to this, and that is the only reason I chose to submit this one.
Nikon-D70, 18-70 mm Nikkor lens, circular polarizing filter. No post-process whatsoever.

I have seen your fantastic tribute to master Pavarotti.
I was also a fan of him, Bulent. I don't know why but personal I find this wave a better tribute to Pavarotti. It is a wave of life and dead, very good photojob here Bulent I like the light in the shot and the power. As a singer. very good photojob, thank you Bulent.
Docarmo (9639) 2007-09-10 8:31
This is an image representing very well our Nature - an energy not completely known yet and far from being controlled.
A visual impact here! Great!
And a good note!
Thanks for sharing,

Wandering_Dan (3449) 2007-09-10 9:50
Beautiful composition, Bulent, with the waves framed just right as the light hits them, crystal sharp image, the power of the sea comes through. Hard to get the sense of scale, though; when I realized from the note this is a 7-meter wave, I looked at it very differently!
Valerka (8171) 2007-09-10 11:32
Fantastic! Is it Nessi or another sea creature? That's the illusion.
meltemi (0) 2007-09-10 11:49
what an impressive picture! You've caught the perfect moment when the wave explodes. Just from here, although I love wind and waves, I'm feeling really small and fragile against the ocean's power. The sharpness and clarity are superb. The atmosphere given by the light through the big wave makes it an outstandig composition.
Warm Regards Professor.
P.S. Thank very much for the video you sent me, I enjoyed it.
alvaraalto (6177) 2007-09-10 14:00
This is definitely not a typical picture of your portfolio, but certainly I very successful deviation in your oeuvre.
Still .. It reminds me of the paintings of our famous Dutch sea-painters. This is almost a detail of some of their paintings.

good motion capture of the ocean. The white foam at the top of the wave is adding the humidity of the air, the wind is well expressed and I can feel the deep movement of the ship.

A very impressive shot of the angry see. You could really feel the power of those waves. Really well done!

Hi Bulent. I am surprised to hear that the Mediterranean has such high waves as you describe. I think of this sea as being calm, but obviously it has its moments. Great notes with astion photo. I'd like to see more of this storm sometime or maybe added as WS. TFS. Murray.
AROBN54 (11473) 2007-09-11 16:20
Warm greetings, Bulent,
I really like this shot. My very most favorite times in the Navy were when we were underway. I have seen some storms in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic and I loved being out on deck during those times. This is a very vivid and wonderful reminder. I agree about the afternoon light. It's marvelous. Fond regards,
adores (39179) 2007-09-11 19:49
I really like this! I guess you captured very well the power of the sea. This wave is great, we can almost see it move. Very impressive!
emjleclercq (15780) 2007-09-11 23:23
Very nice wave, with a great sharpness. The sea is very dark here, but this enhances the white of the foam (which, as you surley know, is one of the wind indicator on the Beaufort scale).
All the best,
jhm (141921) 2007-09-12 4:02
Hello friend Bulent,
What a moment haved you, for taking this spectacular image.
This is a wonderful aquarelle, with the real colour, exactly real painting.
Very well done. TFS.
Tue (28090) 2007-09-12 4:56
Beautiful picture of the high waves here from the ship. You captured the force of the sea very nicely. The sunlight shining on the top of the wave is wonderful. Very well captured and thanks for sharing!
jurgen (2074) 2007-09-12 7:43
I wonder if you shot many pictures and selected this one. Personally, when I shoot waves splashing, I never get such a good picture as this one in my first effort.
The lighting is excellent here, just on the crest of the wave to enhance the contrast against the darker sea. Knowing that it measuers 7-8m, I can imagine they were huge. And by 70km/h winds, it should have been very difficult to even hold the camera.
A great picture.
crckt (7218) 2007-09-12 7:54
I have seen so many shots of the sea, but none as spectacular! Awesome! The light and the turbulence of water looks great here.
kdialyna (3148) 2007-09-12 7:58
Good evening Bulent.
In Greece we say "Fire, woman and sea".
With that we mean that these three are the most dangerous things on the earth and we have to be very carefully, because from one moment to the other, change from something nice and sweet to a wild and dangerous monster.
Very powerful photo shows all the power of the sea.
The very nice against light makes the spray and the top of the wave to look very nice.
My best regards
evanrizo (456) 2007-09-12 11:41
Hi Bulent, a "bold" capture and the result is superb, the result is the right you want I think.
The impress is like I am in a small boat!-:)
The sharpness and the lightness are excelllent too.

Cok hos etkileyici bir kare olmus.
Dalgalara hükmetmissiniz sanki.
PixelTerror (0) 2007-09-13 6:44
There's a feeling of motion and freshness and the rendering of the water is very good, just the top of the wave on the left looks slightly overexposed.
Have a nice day,
ALIRIZA (16423) 2007-09-13 11:16
Merhaba Bülent Abi,
İfadesi güçlü, etkileyici bir çalışma. Dalgaların renk tonları ve kırılmalarla dramatik bir atmosfer. Ellerinize sağlık...

Only once I saw big waves,2-3 mtrs., just in front of me when I was going to take my ssi diving licence... we postponed the examination! Your note is necessary in this picture, it's not so easy to understand how huge they were.... The texture is perfect, as sharpening is.

Merhaba Bülent bey,

Hello Professor A
Perhaps the first picture I'm seeing of a wave & only a wave. At first glace, to understand the scale of it is difficult..but if it's 20 feet high, these are really big waves. Like the reflection of the sun on the crest. Superbly sharp, we see the details in the water very clearly...& observing these details, I feel one understands the beauty of the shot.
With Warmest Regards
jmdaoudal (82) 2007-09-13 21:59
I am not surprised Jaap is considering this composition as in relation with Pavarotti's character.. There are so many feelings about the man and the attitudes, and also life.
Thanks for coming to "Le Pont du Gard", this was also for me the occasion to visit you and your site and discover the scientist and the author you are.
Compliments for this Math and the Mona Lisa.
Like in this composition there is much care to offer a stimulation of sensations (by imagination for others than vision).
A wave ( and I know about it being living at sea side ) is not a shot you can point and press at the camera.. You have to decide in relation of what you intend to obtain.
Your wave is completed, going the right way, the wind is giving a nice effect to the top. Colors and "consistance" are effective.
I like it
feather (51130) 2007-09-14 8:31
I have seen images of waves of all sizes taken from the shore, but I don't think I have seen one from above on a ship. Bearing in mind the size of cruise ships this is a really impressive wave! The wind is whipping the spray in all directions. It looks like you may have been taking a risk with the health of your camera.
mesutilgim (87272) 2007-09-14 8:59
stego (24030) 2007-09-14 17:04
When I see photos like this one so "empty" of any "concrete" compositional element, yet so achieved, so effective and so appealing, I think that only a very inspired mind can shoot them. I can feel the anger of the sea and winds on it.
What can I say? Mentioning the importance of light and of the fine texture of the surface of the water in the beauty of it sounds too little compared with its great punch.
It's funny that it doesn't fit my dreamed image of the Mediterranean.
Kind Regards, José.

I didn't get the scale until I read your note.
Beautiful blues and light ... wonderful textures .. great mood. I like the placement of the wave in the composition. Very nice.
I am sure you know the Debussy ..but if you don't know "the Sea" by Frank Bridge .. it is a wonderful work ... my second favorite to his Lament.
sanita (81) 2007-09-18 9:10
Your tribute to Pavarotti was as all your notes excellent. The day he past on, I was sitting at the see, and as the waves fall and rise it made me think of the power of his voice. I love the see, and every day try to spent some time just looking at it, but I will never go on a boat because my fear of the see is bigger that my love for it. Thanks for this picture.
CatherineD (4864) 2007-09-18 13:15

I like the simplicity of the composition, and the fine details in the sea!
Well framed, and there is made well use of a creative idea...
The fine backlight is the spice!

Hi Dear Professor,
So, this big is the fear of "fluid dynamics" in case you are a bad student in school :))
The idea of freezing this aquatic moment is very nice. Congrats,

I'll award 2 points for bravery on your part.
as for the photo, I like the white streaks in the lower third and the sunlit crest.
dilane (861) 2007-10-11 1:10
Ici le bleu intense de la mer est vraiment le "bleu marine", il convient très bien de le dire, et la lumière sur l'écume de la vague est parfaitement captée. C'est une très très belle photo. Félicitations, votre photo est une belle peinture.
papagolf21 (88095) 2007-11-06 1:36
Bonjour, mon ami Bulent,

Very dramatic view of the angry sea from your dizzing prespective atop the huge ocean liner. Wonderful contrast between the white foam and green sea.

Ciao dear Bulent,
in your gallery I have discovered this very beautiful and suggestive image captured from the Crystal Serenity. Amazing the effect of the movement of the water, in a pleasant contrast of colors. Excellent work, my friend!
Ciao, have a nice week!
Vague (307) 2011-05-10 7:51
Beautiful! Very nice cadre and impressive use of light! Not to mention the simplicity yet powerful feeling imposed by the subject.
Perhaps some more contrast could make it even more impressing. Nevertheless the photograph is very good!
schumanng (0) 2011-10-14 4:56
This is what I mean when I tell about the border between realism and informal art.
If you cut a little your image you can fall into informal, I'm trying such situations in my paintings.
However very strong image, I like it very much.
lakshmip1949 (19081) 2012-05-05 15:40
An excellent nature shot where the sun rays are hitting the violent waves creating nice colors.Lovely grayish blue and white colors with excellent texture and sharpness.
