The Comino Tower, also known as Santa Maria Tower, dominates the isle's South South-West as well as the South Comino Channel, while its guns used to guard both the North and the South Comino Channel.
Under the Aragonese and at the time of the Knights of St.John, Comino was frequently visited by corsairs, where Turkish galleys found shelter within its sleek creeks. The name in Maltese is Kemmuna which is a derivation of an Arabic word meaning "Sheltered place". These corsairs often pounced upon maritime shipping in the area, and mercilessly harrassed helpless Gozo boats loaded with needed supplies.
As a result of these attacks it was decided to build a formidable fortress which was ready in 1618 during the reign of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. The Tower was designed by Engineer Vittorio Cassar. It was armed by eight 32 pounder, and ten 24 pounder guns. It was manned by a garison of 130 men. The heavy guns of Comino Tower played an important role later on in history during the insurrection against French in 1799, when they were used to bombard French positions inside Valletta.

I'm guessing that you took this from a boat, and of course I can't tell which direction you were travelling in, but I think this would have worked better taken a bit earlier (or later) when you were further round to the left of that rocky headland. It's just that I'd have liked to have seen a bit of separation between the headland and the cliff behind.
Other than that, this is a good shot, with good placement of the fortress which also adds a lot of interest to the image.
Good work George.

Cheers,
Ben

Hello George,
A good pov on this rugged landscape with nice balance between tower and towering cliff. I particularly like the layered effect with colours and textures changing as we move from the bottom of the frame to the top. It is a pity there is not slightly more detail in the cliff face, but I guess that's a question of lighting direction and being there at the best time of day; not always possible I know.

Hello George,
One good history lesson, once again, bravo. Now you are a great specialist of Malta. Your Photos tell us more again. You are lucky, always very nice weather and great colours. Good realization and quality.
Cordially

Bonjour George,

Best regards and a great week-end.
Daniel.

Hi George,
A well framed and composed picture of the tower, with superb luminosity and excellent sharpness of the textures of rocks and sea... Colors are also fine, and the architecture and nature are well presented.
Laurent

It really has a nice atmosphere! The contrasts between the rock formation and sea is great. I like the fortress architecture, did you went there?
Malta looks a pretty place to visit.

Have a nice day

Andre

This is an awesome shot. Thw geography is spectacular and you have chosed a great angle and captured it well. The details are really fine and the color in the bright sun is nice and warm and but not overly hot. Well seen and captured.
