Photographer's Note

The Grand Harbour (il-Port il-Kbir) in Malta is essentially a natural harbour which is probably the island's greatest geographic asset, and a cardinal determinant of Malta's history. This is reflected in its commercial activity and its military architecture. The Fort St Angelo ( on the right side) which has a commanding position at the centre of the harbour, and is the oldest fortress responsible for defending the harbour.

Valletta is the designer city of the 16th Century built straight from the drawing-board of three men, a Political Leader and Head of the Order of the Knights, Jean Parisot de la Valette, a warrior engineer Francesco Laparelli, and a Maltese Architect, Girolamo Cassar. Valletta is one of Europe’s most sophisticated micro cities with an intense concentration of baroque architecture and a defense line of Fortifications that is second to non.
The City of Valletta was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980.

Birgu (also called Il-Birgu or Vittoriosa) is a small city in Malta that played a vital role in the Siege of Malta in 1565. It is one of the three best-known cities on this small island nation. Its current population is of 2,691 (Nov 2005).
The city was established on the Great Harbour of Malta around Fort St. Angelo, and served as Malta's principal harbour. When the Knights of St. John arrived in 1530, they made Birgu the capital city of Malta, since the former capital, Mdina, was inland and did not suit their naval requirements. A splendid view of this Grand Harbour that really lives up to its name. I like the point of view looking across the moored rocks towards the ochre toned fortifications. Very good colours and sharpness.
