When the the Knights of Malta arrived in Malta in 1530, they chose to settle in Birgu (also called Il-Birgu or Vittoriosa), and Fort St Angelo became the seat of the Grand Master. The Knights made this their primary fortification and substantially reinforced and remodelled it. Fort St Angelo withstood the Turks during the Siege of Malta, though in the aftermath of that siege the Knights built the fortified city of Valletta on Mount Sciberras across the other side of Grand Harbour, and the administrative centre for the knights moved there.
With the coming of the British to Malta the fort retained its importance as a military installation, and the fort was listed as a ship, originally in 1912 as HMS Egremont, but in 1933 renamed as HMS St Angelo.
Today parts of the fort are leased to the Order of the Knights of St John. Other parts are used as a maritime Museum.

Birgu (also called Il-Birgu or Vittoriosa) is a small city in Malta that played a vital role in the Siege of Malta in 1565. It is one of the three best-known cities on this small island nation. Its current population is of 2,691 (Nov 2005).
The city was established on the Great Harbour of Malta around Fort St. Angelo, and served as Malta's principal harbour. When the Knights of St. John arrived in 1530, they made Birgu the capital city of Malta, since the former capital, Mdina, was inland and did not suit their naval requirements.
After the Siege of Malta in 1565, support for the previously impoverished knights flooded in from across Europe. As a result, Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette was able to implement a long held goal of the knights: the building of a new fortified city on Mount Sceberras, the peninsula opposing Birgu from which the Turks had bombarded Birgu. The new capital city, bore his name, Valletta. After the Siege, the Knights also gave Birgu the title Città Vittoriosa, Italian for "victorious city".
The parish church is dedicated to St. Lawrence. The saint's day is celebrated on August 10. This church was the conventual church of the Order when the Knights settled at Birgu. The Order settled in Birgu until 1575 when the Knights moved to Valletta. As a matter of fact in Birgu one can still find the old Auberges which were all located (except for the Italian Langue) in the Collachio. The Collachio was a confined place where only the Knights were allowed to enter. All these aspects and more can only be appreciated if one visits this unique city which is surrounded by fortified walls and high towers known as St. John and St. James Cavalier, and which are similar to the same named high towers at Valletta. During the visit one should not miss taking a look at the Inquisitor's Palace and the Guva in St.Angelo where Caravaggio was arrested.

You have captured an amazing view of this city from here..looks like a fort to me with uniform colour and also inclusion of the tourists and also the boat had been excellent..over all a very good tourism ahot with great details and colours..!!

I prefer this to your previous panoramic views of the city. The inclusion of the balcony, and especially of the group of men deep in discussion, really adds to the interest of the image. Not that the others weren't interesting, just that with this addition - the 'human element' (hate that expression, but can't think of a better one at the moment!) - the shot works a lot better.

excellent POV qui donne, avec ces personnages, de la vie et du mouvement. On se trouve en altitude et on domine bien cette magnifique ville.
Les lumières sont belles et douces et inondent la vue qui a de la profondeur.

Now I know where you were to take the last pretty photos. I like the people in the belvedere enjoying the view. But what the man is pointing?

nice colors. the shadows on the people works well and didn't reduce the beauty of the view.

Hi George - I like how every part of this frame is filled with interest, but I do want to move the camera more to the left because:
1) the last person at right is unnecessary, there are enough people present to add a human element,
2) to include the left tip of the fortified peninsula and more of the interesting suburb across the bay
3) to make the edge of the observation balcony less centered
