Photographer's Note

One of the very many balconies to be found in Valletta and indeed all over Malta and Gozo. They come in various styles and are made predominantly of wood or stone. They also exist in various states of dilapidation and condition as can be seen here. Much work is being done to repair and improve the older ones in Valletta as part of the city's preparation for 2018, when it will be a European City of Culture. Further examples will be revealed during the course of this series of postings from Malta.

Various explanations have been put forward as to the history and origin of the balconies and their usage. The most comprehensive history I have found regarding Maltese balconies is on the Maltese History and Heritage web site. Here is a link to a fascinating article on the subject.
