The red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public telephone designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, was a familiar sight on the streets of the United Kingdom, Malta, Bermuda and Gibraltar. Despite a reduction in their numbers in recent years, the traditional British red telephone box can still be seen in many places throughout the UK, and in current or former British colonies around the world. The colour red was chosen to make them easy to spot.
From 1926 onwards, the fascias of the kiosks were emblazoned with a prominent crown, representing the British government. The red phone box is often seen as an iconic British symbol throughout the world.
The paint colour used is known as "cherry red" and is defined by a British Standard, BS 381C-539.

A fine capture of this red phone box nicely standing out against the ocre walls, echoing the red of the windows and shutters. Well composed shot with the glorious light illuminating the scene so beautifully. Well spotted and realized.

The red phone box is such an iconic English object it seems quite strange to see it in Malta but doesn't it look super as shown here? Even the windows want to get in on the colourful act and compete for attention with their red paintwork.
Attractive colours and a good observation.

The red telephone box, is in Belgium disappeared, notwithstanding before the GSM a lot used here in our area.
Nice picture with the stairway beside the telephone box and the same colours of the windows.
Fine composition, lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness throughout.
Excellent composition, lovely captured.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

Yes, we saw quite a few of these during our recent trip to Malta. Here it sits perfectly against the ochre toned stonework and nicely complements the colours of the balcony and window shutters. Very good technical presentation.

Thumbs up! Very attractive photo! Well this red telephone box reminds me pictures from Great Britain indeed. Very clever composition, gorgeous colors and fine details of the city.

Although there are many red telephone boxes in Valletta, I think I recognize this location. It's close to the streets with their very long, steep slope.
Just left of this telephone box was my hotel.
The red of the windows fits well with this telephone kiosk.
Wonderful combination of the stone colour of the buildings, the blue sky and this vivid red.
Best regards, Paul

I think in the age of mobile phones the public telephones are of as little use in Malta as anywhere else, but these red ones look good on colour photos. The question is: Did they paint the windows red to match the telephone box, or did they place it in this spot to match the windows? Or could it be just a coincidence? It was well seen in any case, and the harsh light was well handled.

I like very much this composition, the way it presents us this picturesque corner of Valetta and the way it plays with colours. The architectural details are very interesting, the textures natural and attractive. The arrangement of perspectives, details and colours is superb, you've created a delightful graphic result. The light is absolutely delicious. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,

I like this relict of the past. Here it is still used for telephone, but probably rarely. I saw such boxes with library or ATM inside. I hope they will not disappear. I remember how strange I found many year ago that you could also call to this , not only from. Now everyone has mobile...
Well observed also red windows nearby.
Warm regrads MAlgo

Hello dear friend
I am suprised to see a red telephone box
in Malta very strange indeed
But according to your useful notes
I understood that the traditional
British red telephone box can still
be seen in many places throughout the Uk

Ces cabines rouges attirent toujours les photographes. Je note l'effort des propriétaires de la maison qui ont assorti la couleur de leurs volets à celle de la cabine. Belle lumière pour cette photo très réussie.

How funny it is to go to Malta and feel like in UK :-) Well spotted and very nicely delivered. The bright red color if the phone booth and the windows nearby create eye catching elements in these otherwise more pastel colors settings. Good framing and perfect sharpness.
Thanks for sharing

an icon as you rightly say and one that has almost disappeared here in the UK, especially in the mobile phone age. It looks so grand and wonderful in this Mediterranean setting. Captured perfectly.

Toute belle cette image avec la cabine téléphonique typique à Malte, les fenêtres rouges qui s'accompagne, le POV, la netteté et une lumière parfaite, bien gérée

yes, the red telephone box!
unless they start placing internet inside these, they are quickly becoming extinct!
really like how the red stands out so well against the beige backdrops. as you say, the Cherry Red was a smart color choice to bring attention to itself.

An iconic telephone box and as you say in your note so clearly associated with the UK.
It always amazes me that when I am in London tourists queue up to have their photograph inside one of these things! Outside London you don't see them much anymore - mobile phones have replaced them.

Classically English....wait, no...this is Malta? :) What a fun find and a great memento to have here. It couldn't have been better placed or composed to have such a strong impact in conjunction with the red accents from the shutters and balconies in the background. really well put together and presented. Time to make a call! Enjoy the new week. All the best.

A sunny view and a good impact of the repeated red windows, balcony and phone booth... Sharp and clean picture

Excellent cadrage sur cet angle de rue maltaise. Superbe ce rappel de rouge des volets et de la cabine. Un bel effet graphique avec le coin de ciel bleu aussi. Bien vu!

Sorry that I missed this when you first posted it but I have been in the USA for three weeks. I love the juxtaposition of the iconic red telephone box and the red windows. They really stand out against the sandy coloured buildings. Well seen and taken.
Kind Regards, Ann
