Mdina, Città Vecchia, or Città Notabile, was the old capital of Malta. It is a medieval walled town situated on a hill in the centre of the island. Punic remains uncovered beyond the city’s walls suggest the importance of the general region to Malta’s Phoenician settlers. Mdina is commonly called the "Silent City" by natives and visitors. The town is still confined within its walls, and has a population of just under three hundred, but is contiguous with the village of Rabat, which takes its name from the Arabic word for suburb, and has a population of over 11,000
Evidence of settlements in Mdina goes back to over 4000 BC. It was possibly first fortified by the Phoenicians around 700 BC, because of its strategic location on one of the highest points on the island and as far from the sea as possible. When Malta had been under the control of the Roman Empire, the Roman Governor built his palace there. Legend has it that it was here, in around 60 CE, that the Apostle St. Paul lived after his shipwreck on the islands.
Mdina owes much its present architecture to the Arab period, from 870 until the Normans conquered Malta in 1091. They surrounded the city with thick defensive fortifications and a wide moat, separating it from its nearest town Rabat.

bella diagonale del ponte che ci guida diretti alla porta della città, molto bello e tutto ben tenuto.
Bello scatto, la bandiera sventola fiera e le persone passeggiano meravigliate da tanta bellezza.

Hello Stephen, Beautiful gate with bridge over the moat. Malta is so rich in monuments. Perfect composition. I like it very much.
I'm just going for a one week holiday, probably will be out of Internet and TE.

Good Morning Stephen,
I have enjoyed your presentation of Malta. It has been like retracing our holiday several years ago, before I was interested in taking photographs!
Here, we have a contraflow in operation.
The arches are leading us into the gateway, whilst the crowds are (mainly) coming in the opposite direction!
What a beautiful and imposing gateway!
I stand back and wonder how it was designed, who organised the making of it and, of course, who were the craftsmen who actually did the hard work. The details are lovely despite the fact that you had some harsh light to deal with.
Have a lovely day,

a beautifully inviting shot of the striking walls and entrance to this amazing city. Strong sunlight but you have managed it confidently and produced a glorious shot of this attractive gateway.

Le pont est parfaitement placé dans l'image et donne envie de l'emprunter et d'entrer avec tous les visiteurs. La porte est impressionnante et le soleil fait bien ressortir tous les détails.

This is an excellent photo of the gateway to Mdina. I like the way that you have taken the image of the gate obliquely so that we can see the arches of the bridge leading to the gate. The people on the bridge are a nice inclusion.

La longueur du pont ou passerelle donne la profondeur à la composition. La présence des gens anime la scène. La prise de vue permet de voir les détails de l'architecture de la porte. L'image est claire et nette. Bonne soirée.

You show us a lovely photograph of the historic building captured in superb light and sharpness. The perspective is excellent with the group of visitors providing a nice sense of liveliness to the picture. Interesting note on the history of the ancient city.

Strong daylight a bit influenced the outcome, Stephen, but we can comprehend the beauty and size of the old gate to the foprtified quarter of town.
A close view would be most impressive with the two lions guarding the entrance.

a very attractive close view to the old city of Mdina and its gateway. I like very much your vertical composition that includes the bridge in a strong, leading perspective. The great old stone structure is superb, it looks like freshly built and it's almost surprising to see the people in modern clothes. The bright sunshine affects the colours, you managed them aptly and they look very appealing. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Great compositn on this old walled city, the way you have placed the bridge lead into the view perfectly and creates a really nice sense of depth. You alod took this under optimal light conditions which bring out a great amount of detail in the stonework.
He a nice weekend,

This old gate looks so interesting and elegant being presented from this POV. You had a superb idea for this image! Very well seen, vertically framed and executed with great sharpness. TFS!
Have a nice day!

This is a nicely composed shot of this city gate. The diagonal created by the bridge leads the eye into the shot nicely. The vertical format works well showing the height of the scene. The lighting and colors are fine and the photo has fine sharpness.
