Cifte hamam, or Double bath, is one of the two public baths that have remained in Skopje as a legacy of the Ottoman Empire. The bath was built in 1531 by Isa bey, an Turkish aristocrat. It was a bath for both males and females, hence the name double bath. Ofcourse they bathed separately, with the entrances in the parts covered with the large domes which housed the changing rooms and central water fountains. Each smaller dome housed a different bathing room with the heating room for both parts in the middle.
The bath is in the center of the old bazaar in Skopje. Evlija Celebija, the Turkish travel writer, visited Skopje on couple of occasions during the 17th century and counted 70 public baths. Today just two still stand. Cifthe hamam is used as an art gallery for temporary exhibitions. Even if one is not interested in the art itself, the hamam should be visited for the chance to admire the elaborate dome decorations. |
