Photographer’s Note

I am interrupting my China series and posting the picture of a little Byzantine Gem, the Church of St. John at Ohrid. Situated on a small hill near the splendid Ohrid Lake, it stays as one of the best memories of my trip in Macedonia.

Hi Izzet. Good silhouetted appearance of the Byzantine church and the differently-sized trees in the foreground. I like the mood with the light from the back, and the bright reflections on the water surface. Moody shot.

Wonderful POV. Although you can't see the Sun its peresence can be felt everywhere in this picture - in the shining water of the lake, in the silhoutted architecture. Well Done!

(Bel probleminiz için çok üzüldüm, geçmiş olsun. Omurga sorunlarına rağmen bu performans, maaşallah demek lazım, sağlık ve sıhhatli günler diliyorum)

Bonjour, Izzet. Un contrejour bien réussi où l'église apparaît presque en silhouette. J'aime aussi beaucoup les cyprès qui se détachent sur la surface du lac et les reflets de la partie gauche. Un très beau point de vue.

I like this shot into the sun, because it gives such a dramatci look to the scene. This is also well balanced, with the sun on the left and the building on the right. A nice touch is the light reflected off the path, so we can see it leading up to the church out of the darkness. Well done!

Hi Izzet,

the place is very familiar to me, as I used to go there as a kid. But the view is somewhat different from the ones I remember. Maybe the advantage of the camera is to be able to tone down the strong power of the reflecting sun and in the same time to show details of the church, as are the steps or the cross at the top of it. But it requires a true master of photography to make such a good photo and you surely is one.
I added this photo to a theme I have for quite a time of the same church

Excellent shot against the light. The church is extremely well silhouetted against the silver of the lake. I really like the frame coloring to. Thank you for sharing.

Greetings Izzet. I share your feelings too about this magical little church situated in a most inspirational spot overlooking Lake Ohrid. I saw it more than twenty years ago and the vision is still strong. Thanks for showing it at a different hour, under different light.I wish I knew before my recent trip to the Balkans about the technique you are displaying here. You are a great teacher. Salaam.
