Photographer’s Note

Almost every city in Macedonia has its old bazaar, and every old bazaar has its clock tower.
As both muslims and christians had stores in the bazaar, and the muslims had to close their stores at certain times of the day in order to attend the prayers (they are supposed to pray 5 times a day), working hours were introduced so everybody would have equal chances of getting rich. So the clock towers were built.
The present clock tower of Prilep was built in the old bazaar in 1858, by Petre Lauco. It is 39 meters tall and is slightly tilted. On it there is a marble board on which it is written in Persian: “With every bang, your life is shorter for an hour”.

In my opinion the clock tower in Prilep is the most beautiful one in Macedonia. I know that Mishe, Igor and Mafo probably will not agree with me since people from Bitola are especially proud of their clock tower :)
