Photographer’s Note

St.Bogorodica Eleusa was commissioned by the Bishop of Strumica,Manoilo in the year 1080.The church is remarkable for its architecture,fresco-paintings,marble iconostasis and floor mosaic. The church is very specific due to its architectural style of the 11th century in Macedonia. The base is four leaf trefoil with an eight sided dome. The facade is made of brick,in combination with various decorations. The fresco-paintings there are from two diferent periods. The first period is from the time of the construction. This layer is damaged at a later time. The second phase was in 19th century, when the new fresco-painting took place. The most important of the 11th century frescoes,in the southern chapel are:Saint Saviour,Saint Panteleimon,Saint Nifon and Christ Emanuel. In the dome Christ the Pantokrator, was portrayed,in the altar one can see the frescoes of The Holy Mother of God with Jesus, and in the naos, the composition "Descent to Hell" is preserved and "The Visitation" is partially preserved.During a research performed in 1958,it was discovered that beneath the wooden iconostasis the original marble iconostasis was still preserved. There are only fragments preserved of the floor mosaic, which predominantly consist of geometrical decorations.
