Photographer’s Note

This year the Buurgbrennen took place in rain and wind.

The tradition dates back to the Celtic times. The population would gather around a large bonfire built on the highest hill to chase away the bad spirits of the winter. The tradition came back to life in 1998 as the Parish Council of the Sacred-Heart in Luxembourg decided to give it a new go. The Buurgbrennen lights up across the Grand Duchy every first Sunday following Lent. The very large bonfire is often "decorated" with an immense cross built from wood and pine branches, which makes the event seem quite interesting when one looks at the symbolic value of what is being burned. In addition to this there are a number of stands around the bonfires where one can get Glühwein, Thüringer and other local traditional delicacies....

Like last year, I made my way to the one in Bertrange. Unlike last year, tonight it rained. In 2006, the Buurgbrennen took place on a frosty ground and under a starry night. This year the evening was quite gloomy and damp...
I didn't pack my tripod with me tonight, knowing well too well it'd be madness to make my way across the mud-lands surrounding the bonfire. And unlike last year, I took only a few shots (5 to be precise, ten times less than last year). Hope you still enjoy this one... it was all there was to see this year!

--> visit Buurgbrennen a.s.b.l., the ones that takes care of the bonfire in the centre of Luxembourg-City (only in French)

Technical details of photo to come after a good night's sleep ;)
