Photographer’s Note
With a daring step I jump onto a different lane and present you a bit of an artsy shot of one of Luxembourg City's main arteries.
The city is organised around a ring with most of the traffic flowing in a single direction around the city-centre pedestrian zone. Here we are coming northwards from the central train station, across the one-way Passerelle Viaduct (bridge) and into the one-way St Esprit tunnel. As one emerges on the other side of this tunnel one can either head down to the Côte d'Eich, a long descent into the valley that surrounds the City, or down the Boulevard Royal (one way, except for busses) that eventually turns left and heads back South, across the pont Adolphe, to the train station.
A pure accident, as most of my favourite pictures, this one came about as the car hit a little bump and I released the shutter some two seconds before the intended moment.
The reason behind this shot is quite simple: normally this tunnel is light up night and day, but since already the beginning of December they have finally decided to switch the lights off! A brilliant idea!
The speed limit used to be 50 km/h but they raised it to 70 km/h in the summertime, which is frankly quite odd, but nice at the same time. The tunnel is a bendy one, first veering off to the right as it descends before smoothly turning left as the climb starts.
The buildings you can perceive are quite old, and have traditionally been some of the most prized lots for living. However as the whole of Luxembourg is undergoing some major changes and shifts these buildings have lost their view of the surrounding city and valley to that of large concrete buildings fashioned like old ones. The plateau St Esprit is being turned from a sweet park and parking place with an intriguing fountain, into a large Judicial compound.
An advance Thank You to those amongst You who take the time to comment and/or criticise!

Hi Julia
Lovely abstract art here. I can see a 'tunnel effect' with the colorful lights converging onto the dark bit. The blurry houses add extra interests and a hint of reality in this surreal scene. Nicely done.

Dear Julia,
A lovely shot! I have been telling you for some time that I planned and tried to shot a "tunnel" shot. Finallly I was quite disappointed by the result. The shot was quite ok and I was "relieved" to have tried, but it was nothing really special. More like an advertising shot for nice cars, but not an artistic shot like this one!
So, yes, that's the kind of shot I was dreaming about and I hate you for shooting it, as you say, by pure accident ;-)
Well, to sum it up and stay less long then your lovely notes: I like it a lot because of the great colors and the artistic effect of speed, which still leaves visible so many elements, like on top the buildings above the entrance and centered the tunnel itself. Just brilliant artistic elements!
Many greetings, Mike

I like it very much. It's a highly creative shot. The vertigo effect is very strong and those rays of light (in full color) are a real bliss. I have worked a bit on the picture because I miss some light on those buildings. Don't know if it was your intention or not to involve in shadows the entire scene but I guess a little more light would increase its impact. But I can be wrong... :) Anyway, I tried a ws. Thanks for this irreverent shot! ;)

Hei Julia,
I have seen light stripes shot from a moving vehicle before. But blurred image of those builings above the tunnel opening make this unique. Something worth trying again, you never know what you get.
Maybe the sky could be darkened a little.

Hi Julia
Got your e-mail and hopefully you had my response.
I am right now on the ferry to Kiel and will tomorrow go to Nancy for my soutbound overnight stay - hopefully we will meet in the first Saturday of March supervised by John Mortier in your (present) country for a small TE gathering.
.. ehh.. for the photo: Creative, original work in a kind of shattering tech. Interesting - I hope by passing Lux tomorrow that my vision is a bit more clear even if the effect here is most daring..
See you :-)

I figured out, after some time staring at it, where you took this shot! Just before entering the tunnel at the Plateau du Saint-Esprit! Although I am not an adept of abstract photography I must admit that this one has something! The tunnel effect, underlined by the colors, is great. The note is very interesting and deserves a large smiley by itself.
