Photographer’s Note

The last days I showed you some pictures of the Old Town of Echternach in Luxembourg. The founder of this oldest town of the country is St. Willibrord. Echternach grew around the walls of the abbey, which was founded by him in 698 AD. Today his bones are entombed in a magnificent sarcophagus in the crypt of the great basilica St. Willibrord. You can see the basilica in the workshop.

Here I show you the wooden sarcophagus in which the bones were entombed from the 17th century until 1906. This old sarcophagus is placed in the ground floor of the northern steeple of the church St. Peter and Paul. It's situated on a small hill opposite to the basilica at the place of a former small monastery which was bequeathed to Willibrord by the Abbes Irmina of Trier. Light wasn't very favourable there but I think the shown is interesting and so I beg your pardon for the quality of the photo ...

This Romanesque church was built in the 10th century and it has wonderful frescoes, which I'll show tomorow. Already in the year 275 a Latin fortification wall was built here on this hill which was completed by a building and four watchtowers in the year 375.

You can see the building of Peter and Paul also in the workshop.
