Trakai Island is located near Vilnius and is easily accessible by bus or train. A 20 - 30 minute walk from the station on a sinuous peninsular road surrounded by lakes leads to the castle. The lakes are huge and provide for great walks or boat rides. On a hot summer's day, locals enjoy a refreshing swim in the clean water. The place has several lakes and a national park.
Trakai is also significant for its demographics as it is home to a fairly large Polish and Karaite population. The Karaite people are a Turkic minority living here since the 14th century and they make a delicious pasty called Kibinai.
