Photographer’s Note

Those two letters stand for "Fürstentum Liechtenstein", one of the smallest European countries (only 160 km2) between Switzerland and Austria. Like Monaco and channel or carribbean islands, Liechtenstein gets its wealth from very relaxed regulations and taxes for companies, which explains that many companies (about 74000, to compare with a total population of about 34000) have settled here, mostly as postboxes.

Despite being a full size state, Liechtenstein is widely associated to Switzerland, uses the Swiss Franc as a currency and has the Swiss Border Guards control its border with Austria (the country has no army, wise people). There are no border checks between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Actually its situation regarding this association with Switzerland can be compared to the association between Monaco and France.

Part of the country including the capital Vaduz is located in the Rhine Valley and is flat, but as soon as you leave the valley the roads go up very steeply, which offers opportunities for PoVs a la Captain. Here is one of them taken from Triesenberg, you can see the Rhine tracing the divide between both countries, so the foreground is Liechtenstein and the background Switzerland.

Salut Jean-Yves,

Un petit pays mais une vue grandiose! Très intéressant d’inclure le Rhin qui traverse ta photo avec une légère diagonale. L’utilisation de la végétation au premier plan donne encore plus de profondeur à la scène. Les gros nuages ouateux fournissent l’effet dramatique désiré pour une composition idéale.

Alors si je comprends bien ta note, tu étais de passage au Liechtenstein pour y faire tes dépots bancaires... Moi je crois que dans ton cas, FL signifie plutôt «fully loaded».

Oh, WOW! Liechtenstein! I´m fond of these dwarf countries and have been in Vaduz in 1993; no photos left, unfortunately...

Amazing deep panorama, captured with nice diagonal composition, very good DoF and light. The colours of foreground, vastness of middle plane, background mountains, sky - everything is speaking and telling a story! A chocolate for the eye!:)

bonne présentation de cet état que l'on connait si peu, ta note est vraiment intéressante pour cela...
Je ne savais pas qu'il utilisait le franc suisse par exemple.

Au niveau de ta photo, le point de vue est bon et donne une bonne idée de cette ville par contre, la lumière était un poil dure.

T'as fait le tour de la Suisse le WE dernier?
Ah oui, pour aller en Silvretta, on passe par là, ou par les Grisons.
Pas mal la vue, un bon avant plan, le Rhin au millieu et les montagnes Suisse.
T'aurais pu faire un effeort et les citer dans ta note ! LOL
Allez, pour l'effort, je dirais l'Alvier...

très jolie vue d'ensemble avec un arrière plan particulièrement interressant (jolis nuages!).

J'aime aussi la perspective créee par la vallée.

Bon POV sur cette vallée, bon c'est peut être un peu brumeux en fond mais tu n'y peux rien et puis il y a tout ce vert qui donne de la couleur à la photo, la rivière qui serpente au fond de cette vallée fait un bon effet. Finalement c'est un état dont tout le monde (ou presque) connaît le nom mais n'est pas souvent montré (par rapport à Monaco dont tu parles dans ta note). Intéressant TE partage.

Je vois que tu fais dans le coloriage aussi! ;o)
Une belle Capitainade pour la photo de ce petit état. Dire que je l'ai traversé plusieurs fois sans jamais le photographier (c'était avant que je connaisse TE). Beau panorama et surtout une très grande profondeur. J'aime bien ces gros nuages qui coiffent les montagnes Suisses. Je constate que les kilomètres ne te font pas peur!

Petit pays mais grand panorama. Cette position dominante autorise une belle vue de ce petit Poucet. Je suis rassuré, il n'y a pas que des comptes bancaires.

Hello JY - you probably captured most of this "country" in this shot, great view of the rhine valley, the typical summer haze is at least almost absent here, the multiple shades of green lookm very attractive, I see even Switzerland's little b*tch has her own "view map" function while China, Russia, UK etc. do not.

Liechtenstein one of the beautiful small countries out of this region, but you took a splendid picture with foreground Liechtenstein and Switzerland in background, the most beautiful in this picture I find is the Rhine in middle, what a panorama view.

I don't know the expression "a la captain" but assume it means high POV?
This is certainly a high POV and the detail is incredible. I like the inclusion of the foreground triangle of hillside, which gives the image great depth along with the background mountains enclosing the valley.

I like your pov here. Although it's a bit hazy above the clouds, the overall view is just great..!!!

Jean lovley scene from up this height. It can be a challenge keeping the details intact when you downsize for posting. This photo however looks great for detail. I have to ask you how you like your 10-22 lens. I am seriouly thinking of getting that lens next. Thanks for sharing, its a wonderful place!

Fantastic panorama shot of the alps JY. I know this is where you feel the most comfortable and yesterday was a nice change of pace. Now you are back to your strengths and its marvelous. Too bad these dimensions cant be posted as a large version, I think it would be awesome.

Colour, light, DOF, POV...all great!!!
I really enjoy the changing land. From luscious green foreground, to townships & Rhine River, to snow-topped mountains & clouds in the background. Wonderful combination!
I also love the foreground and Rhine River running near-parrallel to lead the eye to the mountains in the background.

Ce qui est sympatique avec ce petit pays, c'est qu'il n'est pas difficile de l'embraser d'une seule photographie !
Tu as su prendre de la hauteur pour obtenir ce résultat.
J'aime la compo avec cette imposante chaine de montagne en arrière plan couverte par de gros nuage.
Tout ceci est très bien fait.

Great informative note to accompany this pleasantly green view. You have been doing quite some weekend travel - I hope the dogs enjoy it! As you say, the POV looking down is excellent and shows off the nice variety of landscape.

Nice wide-angle of FL and CH. Pretty funny idea that you can have a whole country on a single picture. Where is the mail office building? It probably might be the largest building in the country :-))

Une composition très propre et nette avec le panorama depuis un point de vue haut de cette belle vallée et petit pays.
La diagonale de la rivière nous attire l'attention et porte notre regard jusqu'aux montagnes splendides du fonds. Ah ! les belles Alpes.
Cette photo est très agréable et elle est très bien faite.

je viens d'en apprendre plus en 2 minutes sur ce pays que durant mes 47 années passées sur Terre et en Europe, un commentaire pas trop long mais qui en dit long.
Une photo avec un POV remarquable en altitude permettant d'admirer sur des kilomètres,cette frontière naturelle.

Hi J-Y,
You achieved to get almost a whole country (plus a big part of other) in a single shot.
I like the panorama, with the river and valley, but I'd like to see more of FL and less of CH.
This is the only country where I entered walking, going on foot up to the capital city :-)
