The seashore in Ziemupe, an inhabited place on the coast of the Baltic sea about 17 km north of Liepāja, is very unusual, being the only example of its kind in Latvia. The coast is subject to varying degrees of erosion. Where it is most prominent, as in the area near Ziemupe church, erosion is severe, with around 10 m of the coast having disappeared in recent years. The height of the steep coast ranges from 5 to 12 metres. Landslides still occur in some places.

The Ziemupe area of the coast is famous for its picturesque sights. One can see different colours and patterns at eroded coasts, in the dunes and in the sand. Grey dunes are most colourful in June and July, shifting dunes and forests become more colourful after the autumn frosts. Leaves of birch-trees and aspens fall off, but dune grasses remain yellow all over the winter.

Most of the Ziemupe coast is included in the Ziemupe Nature Reserve. There are two parts to the Nature Reserve: the sea shore from Ziemupe to Rudupe Rivers and the inland area to the east. Further studies revealed that the Ziemupe coast is unique because of its dune plant communities and plant species, so Vçrgale Municipality made a resolution in 1992 to
create a protected area for the Ziemupe coast as well. The two areas were amalgamated in 1999, and the Ziemupe Nature Reserve was established with a total area of 2470 ha. A 300 m wide strip of the Ziemupe coast is
included in the dune protected belt.

Ziemupe Nature Reserve is significant not only in Latvia but in Europe as well. It is included in the network on NATURA 2000 sites. It means that Ziemupe Nature Reserve is a specially protected nature territory of the European importance and Latvia has taken responsibility to preserve it.

Hello Ivana,
very good choice of the B&W for this picture. I like the peacful atmosphere there, and the sharpness of the coastline that takes us to the horizont.

TFS,
Jérôme

Hello Ivana! This is incredible and it makes me shiver a bit on this lovely Zurich afternoon, fall not far away but still warm enough to call it summer. The tone you chose is fantastic, everything is in a perfect flow as the water running through, out into the ocean. Excellent work, wonderful. Barbara.

Hello Ivana,
nice and artistic shot. I like the curves, the lights and the B/W option you chose.
very well done!

Hi Ivana,
Great B&W shot! Perfect light and good composition. I would have tried also a shot with the man/woman positioned just under the horizont line...
Well captured.

Bravo.
Christian

Lovely composition, the strange mix of water and land intersected with eachother in a curvy way looks really superb and the lonely silhouette of the man standing there completes the beautiful scene.

Hi Ivana,

a lot interesting composition with the silhouettes and reflection of the sky on the water. The choice for the vertical framing helps to emphasise the purpose. Lovable shot!

Carlos

Hi Ivana,
this is really nice, the curves and the textures are in harmony.
Good b/w conversion.

Beautiful one Ivana, really beautiful
This BW has really superb aspect, marvelous tones.
Full of mood and spiritual, as usual in your case and poetic brain.
I love it

Hi Ivana,

Regards,
Stéphanie.

Hi Ivana,
Great composition. Very artistic. I really like the dark figure of the man. Excellent choice of B&W.
Thanks for sharing,
Christianna

Hello Elaine,
Very good composition as the subject in the photo is placed higher in the frame and allows the viewer to feel as if they also are peering down into the water. Interesting shapes in the dunes...
Steve

Hi Ivana,
This is simply amazing. The scene looks strange, kind of sad and creepy - hard to find words to describe. Mild sepia tone strengthens that effect. I love it, especially the way you positioned your model!
Congrats.

Hi Ivana, very nice BW conversion here, I like the diagonal of water stretching across the image, and of course the man makes it all quite TE-friendly, he-he :))) Seriously, very nice picture, the one that drew my eye immediately!

Cheers
Alexander

Hi Ivana, the image mood is great, as well as the composition, my concern here is that the neck is right at the horizon level creating visual tension amid the peaceful mood you have created. The light management is very good.
Cheers,
Enrique

Very poetic moment Ivana. The curved shore is looks very sensual and the little river and the lonely man really boosts the atmosphere of the whole shot. B&W was a clever choice here. Colors probably would confuse and ruin the mood of this one. The way it is helps us concentrate in the poetry rather than the technique. I love that.

Bonsoir Ivana
Bravo. Dans mes favorites !

Ivana,
You perfectly caught the graphics curves on the sand, perfectly placed the person into the frame, and perfectly managed exposure and light... A great one, very strong.

Hello Ivana,

Great moody photograph Ivana,
The B&W fits with this subject matter very nicely. This is almost like visual poetry. There is so much we could think or say about this photo. Each person can draw there own ideas about the symbolism. Nice work.
Regards,
Ryan

You have some really nice curves and textures here, Ivana! It's a graphic shot that could succeed as a pure abstract, a study in lines. But it's great to have a person, especially a silhouette, placed in the middle of all that abstraction. I like your framing with the high horizon, too. Regards, Ken.

Hi, Ivana. You've made a very good use of the lines leading towards the sea to compose your picture. The person is very well placed in the image and gives a good depth to it. I like the very soft apsect of the sand on the left.

Hi Ivana!
You made a good choice of B&W. Also, the silhouette and the coastline are prfectly clear and well-positioned into the frame.

Well done

Sotiris

Hi Ivana. Great photo. You have the artists eye for composition I think. You have created a very moody atmosphere in this shot. Excellent BW conversion also. Thanks for sharing.

Greetings Ivana. I just found this shot of yours from a week ago. A strange and lonely photograph, too. I love it. It certainly has an eery quality to it, and the b/w treatment is very appropriate. The water at the bottom of the photo actually looks very deep, it is so dark. Marvellous perspective is achieved here, and the inclusion of the man is a great touch; he looks so pensive lost in his own thoughts. Thanks for the notes too.
Regards,
Andrew
