View of the old part of Riga from St Peter's church belltower. Not at all original, the tower is on most visitors' itinerary, I lied the incoming rainstorm.
About st Peter's:
This church was mentioned for the first time in 1209. In that time it was meant to be the main church of the town. During the fight with the Livonian Order in 1297 it was used for catapult bombarding of the Wittenstein Castle. In 1408-1409 Rostock architect I. Rummeschotel added a new altar part the existing building. The construction works continued in 1456 and by 1473 the old church was reconstructed. The tower of the church had quite a bad luck. It was rebuilt many times. For the first time it collapsed in 1966. Then it was burned down several times - the last one was right on St. Peter's Day in 1941. In 1971, the tower was restored. From the observation platform built on the top of the tower you can enjoy a wonderful bird's eye view of Riga. Nowadays it's one of the best samples of Gothic architecture in the Baltics. Various concerts and exhibitions are held in the church.

Excellent view over the city, great use of your wide angle. The city looks quite wealthy. ANother missed real estate boom. I had read that in the baltic countries real estate prices ahve grown faster than anywhere else.
Im off to indonesia on Friday,

Great composition. The POV is splendid and so as the colours and the light. Thanks for sharing,

Nice and colorful view of Riga - polarizing filter certainly helps to get saturated colors and good looking sky. River is well placed in the photo.
It seems that there is too much sharpening applied here especially visible on diagonal lines of buildings and the bridge. Also I would have corrected the barrel distortion while doing post-processing.

wonderful view of this beautiful town, nice composition and good color...well done

The is a very nice shot. Nice view from the tower showing us the old section of Riga. The lighting and colors are great with nice detail. The sharpness is a bit overdone, you could leave out the sharpening in PP and have a better image. The sky is great and adds a nice touch to the photo.

Hello Tan. Once again a wonderful photo from a high vantage point, which seems to be a favorite hobby of yours. I love the wide angle reach with the 10-22 lens and the view above the rooftops has provided excellent color in this frame. Excellent shot once again superb details sharp as a pin. Do you use USM or are you using Smart Sharpen in Photoshop CS2. Just curious.
Thanks for sharing..

Hi Tan, wow, lot of colour in this one. Great perspective on this town to capture all of these different buildings with their contrasting colours. You've capped it well with that great blue river and sky.

Superbe vue de Riga sous une lumière splendide.
ribeiroantonio (22637) 2007-07-17 22:58
It is a very nice picture where we can admire the old part of the city and also some modern structures as the bridge and the building across the water. The different colours of the roofs are very beautiful and quite unusual. Well done.

Beautiful high point of view over Riga. I don't know this city but it look to be a very nice place.
Excellent exposure that give both the view on the houses and on the cloudy sky.

These european cities are really marvellous. I like your perspective here, the red dominance in the foreground and the blue dominance in the background. The river is an interesting line dividing the frame. Great POV, sharp, colors... Beautiful shot!
stiginthedump (1823) 2007-07-17 23:52
Nice wide angle shot of the city here Tan. The colours are all very vibrant and the sharpness is very nice. But i personally find it to be a little too wide. To me, the picture is all about the buildings in the foreground and i find the left hand side to be a little 'empty'. It's nice to have some humans to give a sense of scale, but you have them dotted along various parts in the frame.
jonathan_hart (21274) 2007-07-18 2:49
well done Tan, a very good POV with a lot of details to watch
very good shapness and excellent light, very appreciated
belido (19934) 2007-07-18 4:50
very nice view of that beautiful city. It looks there is a contrast between the old part on the right and the modern part on left. Colors and contrast are great, but I think there is too much sharpness in this one. Good job!

Another great panoramic shot from you! I don't know what your secret is, but your photos always come out with razor sharp clarity and colours that just jump out of the frame, making them seem very realistic. In this one I like the contrast between those red roofs and the blue sky, and also the interesting line of towers (office building, bridge, church spires) on the skyline. Excellent work!

I love the wide-angle effect and the bright, saturated colours. Interesting contrast between the old and new buildings too. Superb depth created by the curving river.

Oldukça yüksek bir seviyeden çektiğin için şehir çok güzel görünüyor.
Bulutların hakkını da vermek lazım.

what a lovely town! You describe it in every detail, and it is nice. I like the way modern and ancient buildings are assembled there, and I like the church.
Very sharp composition, perfect.A cloudy sky helps it too.

A high impact cityscape, with great hues and tones. Now I know what you were up to in May...The clarity of detail is amazing and your wide angle was working well for you. I like the diversity of colour and the overall lighting. The modern buildings across the river contrast well with the older architecture. Cheers.
jhm (134440) 2007-07-19 3:27
An lovely panorama view about a old city, but with a lot modern buildings and urbanisation.
The river together with the bridge give a nice composition, also excellent perspective.
Very lovely image, nice colours too.

Excellent composition with the roofs of the buildings as and the bridge to have a nice perspective and POV.The result is that we see all the frame as better we can.Your fine image taken at the most perfect time of the day. What a great view over the city of Riga! I like the many colourful houses and facades in front. This creates a nice contrast with the more modern architecture of the bridge and the buildings at the other side of the river. Well captured and thanks for sharing!

Angshu (54493) 2007-07-25 0:50
Appears that the river separates the new town from the old. Classic high POV, showing us the old houses in the FG & the diagonally flowing river. One can understand the scale seeing the ant like people in the square. Lovely shot!
krakowiak (4762) 2007-08-07 1:55
This composition is quite typical, there's a lot of photos taken from this place, but the final effect you've achieved is fantastic. The light it's just perfect, there's good visibility with a great clouds in the distance and using wide lens like Canon 10-22 gives nice almos panning shot of this beautyful Old Town ;)
batalay (34575) 2007-11-14 4:37
In 1990 we were scheduled to visit Riga with the ship the Royal Viking Sun, but the political tension gripping the three states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, made it impossible to do so. This is a fabulous shot, with an informative note to complement it.
Warm regards from Virginia,

Your gallery is full of surprises.. probably thanks to the unbelievable number of places you have visited!!! I am wondering how you could have done it within 40 years only!!! Great city shot. Very sharp and a sky that makes me jealous (weather is so foggy today in the city I work in china... can't see a damn thing!) :O) Tibo
