In the architecture of the historic centre of Riga examples of all architectural styles characteristic for the Northern Europe, from Gothic to Modernism, are found.
The regular building of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is characteristic for the planning of the historic centre, oriented towards the direction of main streets in the Old City, which emerged approximately in the 14th century. Dismantling of outdated defense systems (ramparts, dams, constructions) in 1857 – 1863 was an important impetus for the development of the city construction.
As a result, the picturesque Boulevard Circle was designed and in the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with the rapid development of high-rise dwelling construction, unique Art Nouveau examples were created. In some districts of Riga, for various reasons, complex wooden constructions of that time have still been preserved, and that is an amazing phenomenon in the 21st century. In 1997 the historic center of Riga due to this valued architecture was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Dome Cathedral, considered the largest church in the Baltic states. Built in the 13th century, it was modified several times along its history. It has a magnificent organ that dates from 1844.

Hi George,
What a colourful city! First, I thought it was a picture of Lego constructions!!! The weather conditions were not ideal to take the picture and you managed to keep a good quality.
Colours are just a little bit too saturate for my taste.
Regards,
Delphine

Hi George,
Is this for real? I honestly thought this must a snap from the Toy Land. I have never seen an urban city so vibrant in colours.

Hi, George! I'm visiting your pics again and I see they show places I've never seen before, like Riga, for instance. This pic shows how green is the city and how beautiful is its historical center. Great POV and colours! Thanks for sharing! Greetings from Rio! Miguel.

A good PoV, and as has been said, showing te old city off to its best. I like over saturated colours for this type of shot, but with Delphine I agree that you seem to have overdone it a bit here.

Beautiful this city! It has a higher place to took this photos? I note the other one was from a place like that.

Great colors and depth.

Hi George - bumping up the saturation has done wonders to improve the colours under this boring dull light, OK may be a tad overdone, but the result looks really nice. When I was standing at the same spot, the overcast was even thicker...for the entire 3 day period I spent in Riga.
