Photographer’s Note
Riga is truly a city of diversity as you can quite easily see by comparing this photo to my last one (Daugava Bridge) or by just spending a couple of minutes wandering around near Riga's central train station.
In my experience the Latvian people (whether they be of Russian or Latvian descent) are quite closed and keep to themselves. Approaching people and interacting was near impossible for me -- quite the opposite to my time in South East Asia where most people were very open, willing to communicate and get involved with tourists. I can think of all sorts of reasons for this but I suspect that such a long period of what was essentially foreign rule may be very close to the heart of it. That and the fact that as Latvia is a newcomer to the EU the people are not accustomed to so many tourists and foreigners roaming their streets.
This photo was taken in an old area of Riga where houses are built primarily of wood. Many people are impoverished and some people are forced to live not in these old wooden buildings but in makeshift shacks made of tin sheets (as can be seen in the background of this shot).
Definitely this is not a pretty situation but with Latvia now a member of the EU this will hopefully bring massive benefit to people across the economic spectrum.

Hi Lewis, this is a great picture, nice composition and depth of field.
Thanks for the interesting note. I have been to Latvia as well, and I found the younger people quite friendly and open, especially when they found out that I would let them practice their English on me. However, many of the older people seemed a bit suspicious of outsiders and took longer to get to know.

Hello Lewis
I like the bokeh as well as the way you have captured the environment, it seems like quite neglected from an urban poitn of view, but it makes for a great photo.

Hi Lewis. Good shot, something different from Riga, not the glitz and glamour of the night life nor the beautiful barouque buildings. I like the somber mood as well, just the 2 men chatting. The DoF is good as well.

Hello Lewis... what an excellent capture with these old people discussing something in that no-man's land looking yard in which that little stool is symbolically discarded in the middle. A fantastic, poignant mise-en-scene that just deepens the meaning of your note... very good work!

This is a great photo. The framing is perfect, the DOF is suitably shallow, the way items like the stool stand in focus against the background is great. Even the pigeon is adding something to the shot!
