Photographer’s Note

I must appologise!

I thought 2005 was the summer of love, but 2004 was a bigger succes!

In Par Daugava, located in the Arkadijas park, this bridge is loaded with locks. By the looks of it, most are older than one year . . .

Arkadijas parks is a jewel in the city. Known by only local residents, it is worth visiting. Take tram nr. 10, close to the Akmens Tilts (the middle of the three bridges) and get out the third stop. The park has a romantic feeling, and some beautiful buildings that are in desperate need of renovation.

The park is a historical site. Started in 1794 it was established as a 'simple place for entertainment'. In 1852, Vermanis the Consul General for Prussia, build a greenhouse where even palmtrees grew. Once more decayed, it was bought buy the city of Riga in 1896 and Georg Kuphalt lanscaped it. The park was completed in 1911.
During 1988-1989 political meetings were frequently held in the park, witch marked the beginning of the new Latvian independance. The good news is that it will be renovated (one day), the bad news is that for people like me it will loose a lot of it's charm.
