The seashore in Ziemupe, an inhabited place on the coast of the Baltic sea about 17 km north of Liepāja, is very unusual, being the only example of its kind in Latvia. The coast is subject to varying degrees of erosion. Where it is most prominent, as in the area near Ziemupe church, erosion is severe, with around 10 m of the coast having disappeared in recent years. The height of the steep coast ranges from 5 to 12 metres. Landslides still occur in some places.

The Ziemupe area of the coast is famous for its picturesque sights. One can see different colours and patterns at eroded coasts, in the dunes and in the sand. Grey dunes are most colourful in June and July, shifting dunes and forests become more colourful after the autumn frosts. Leaves of birch-trees and aspens fall off, but dune grasses remain yellow all over the winter.

Most of the Ziemupe coast is included in the Ziemupe Nature Reserve. There are two parts to the Nature Reserve: the sea shore from Ziemupe to Rudupe Rivers and the inland area to the east. Further studies revealed that the Ziemupe coast is unique because of its dune plant communities and plant species, so Vçrgale Municipality made a resolution in 1992 to
create a protected area for the Ziemupe coast as well. The two areas were amalgamated in 1999, and the Ziemupe Nature Reserve was established with a total area of 2470 ha. A 300 m wide strip of the Ziemupe coast is
included in the dune protected belt.

Ziemupe Nature Reserve is significant not only in Latvia but in Europe as well. It is included in the network on NATURA 2000 sites. It means that Ziemupe Nature Reserve is a specially protected nature territory of the European importance and Latvia has taken responsibility to preserve it.

Hello Ivana,
Looks simple, but it isn't!I always like the black and white treament to this kind of imageg.Gives a dreamy feeling and contrast the heavy reality.I like it very much!

I like it, but I wonder if the color version would not show the movement of the foreground water better?

Hello Ivana,
Beautiful BW/sepia seascape and very thorough note on the Ziemupe’s coast conditions. Your composition is simple, but very effective in capturing the erosion that chastises the beach and the wonderful complementary, diverging lines of the rock row and the clouds/open sky. Nobody pointed to that, but I think it’s what makes the picture so nice.
Regards,
Victor

Hi Ivana, my neighbour today,

Hello Ivana,

I know very little about the Baltic area. It is good that I can develop a mental note of this area with the help of photos like this. Looks to be a very inviting stretch of coastline, I am glad to hear of its ecological significance and that it is getting the protection it deserves. The black and white format was an interesting choice, but I have used it recently also and can see how it can transform an image into a new 'dimension' of contrasts and depth. You rely on texture and tone more in the absence of colour to promote your image which is a difficult thing but it works well here in this instance. Thank you for this post and the substantial note also!

Hi Ivana,

I like this seascpae and the choice u made to use b&w...

Cheers,

Loïc

Ciao Ivana, this is a beautiful B&W indeed, it need at my opinion only a bit of more contrast of the sky, but this is my opinion, anyway, I much like this because the great wide view and for your POV, the composition of the image with the small strip of earth well placed on the center of the image, well done, compliments.
Have a nice week-end
Ciao
Vinicio

it is always interesting to learn how others see your home country, and I am happy that you seem to like it :) your photo is very elegant in a subtle way, no bold colours, just elaborate patterns and textures. I think it describes Latvia pretty well - I've always thought its beauty lies in the unobtrusive details.
there are many things I like about this photo, but what I enjoy most is the captivating perspective the strong lines create, together with the V-shaped cloud formation it gives the shot a nice 3D feeling.
very well seen and presented, my compliments.
best,
Kristine

Hello Ivana
This one is a very great shot.
I like this dialogue between puddle of the low tide and the sky. The movement is reversed. The black and the white returns the very strong photo very strong and intense.
Bravo
Diane

Hi Ivana,
this is the type of landscape photography I really like. The B&W sepia look with the rich dark tones and the contra jour highlight look fantastic. I could imagine this as a large framed print on the wall. Really very nice image.
