Daugavpils (Dünaburg) Fortress is the only sample of the 19th century fortress not only in Latvia, but also in the whole Northern Europe and the territory of post USSR, which has not practically lost its primary look.
During the long period of 200 years the fortress has experienced motley historical events; it has been suppressed by different political powers and has fulfilled different functions: the battles against the Napoleone troops had taken place here, both Germans and Russians have been the masters here during the First World War, the camp where the prisoners of war were kept was also in the fortress, the territory of the fortress was a closed military zone during the years of Soviet power. |
