this is the Blackhead's House - precise replica finished in 2001 of a building that was destroyed during the World War II.

the original Blackhead's House was first mentioned in 1334. the building was owned by the Great Guild that sprang up not later than in the 14th century. the Guild consisted of the privileged groups of merchants and landholders in the Baltics and had a great influence on the town council work. in the 15th century, the house was rented out to the Blackheads Merchant Guild and became their property in 1713.

the Blackheads was characteristically a common union of young, unmarried merchants and ship captains in the Hansa cities, which chose St. Maurice to be their patron. St. Mauritius was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century, and one of the favorite and most widely venerated saints of that group. St. Maurice is sometimes represented as a black Moor, which is actually the meaning of his name, and from this the name of the brotherhood “the Blackheads” comes. due to their exceptional status the Blackheads played an important role in the society life and traditions; many VIPs of that time (including Russian tsars) took part in events organized by the Blackheads.

Blackheads' Houses, in turn, were clubs and communities at the same time. the House in Riga at once contained one of the world’s richest collections of silver objects. the building was destroyed in 1941, and the Soviets completely pulled down the ruins in 1948, because it was considered to represent 'decadent' German architecture.

-------------
about the photo - around 4PM, the sun was on my right and already setting. in summer I would have waited longer to have the last rays of sun illuminating the façade of the building, but in early spring, when the sun is still low, the shadow of the building behind me would completely block the Blackhead's House.

Hi Kristine,

Colorful facades are stunning under splendidly blue sky. You perfectly captured their rich ornaments and statue at front. Excellent clarity in natural colors and sharpness. Congratulations.

Best Regards,

Ertugrul

Hi Kristine,

very beautiful architecture, incredible details and well chosen color. It looks a pleasant place for a walk. The moment of the day with this warm light coming from right and the contrast between the orange and the well polarized sky is what makes this to pop up in my monitor. Thanks for sharing a bit of the city where I suppose you were born. Very good work!
Regards,
Carlos

Kristine,
Very nice architecture here and you have captured it well. The lighting and colors are excellent with very nice sharpness and DOF. The addition of the statue in the foreground is a nice touch to the photo.

hey there

hmm... folks call this backlight: seems more like side-light to me :)) anyway, love the original ornateness you have managed to show here. that fasade is really amazing. what a shame it was bombed to dust in WWII... anyway, the story is not about that. love your shot! my compliments.

ps. polonaise sends his kisses :))

Olá Kristine,

This is a very nice architecture. I like the way you made the building looks so long, and that takes your eyes thru the building. The sky is also great.
Well done,
Filipe

Hi, Kristine -

Great photo. Excellent light management (although the dark patch on the far right could have cut out with no loss, I think); the colors and details are great both in the lit parts and the shadows - not easy to combine that! I also like the way the roof on the left and the two weathervanes work to suggest a diagonal. Good balance with the foreground, too.

Best,
Dan

Hi Kristine,
a classic, flawless display of backlight (or rather... sidelight) management, featuring great overall detail and wonderful colors.
The architecture is awesome, very different from anything I know. EXCELLENT shot and very interesting note, thanks for sharing!
Have a great weekend. I'll see ya soon,
Fulvio.

Hi Kristine!
Wonderful red houses (or this is one house?)! It's sad that this is only replica :(

I see that Riga is very beautiful city, although I've been there only 21 years ago as a child and remember very few from it.

TFS! Regards, Igor

Hola Kristine,

Thank you for sharing

hi Kristine

Very well composed pov to show the majestic front end of such lovely decorations and facade. Good exposure setting and using the light from side. Sharp and nice contrast. The 2 building is different from each other yet they compliment in the design feature and color.

Dear Kristine,
Seems that only sunny day you took more images than ever before ;-)
Just as in all the others you had great light that day were a mix of warm and strong contrasting light gave you a wonderful setting. Crisp and bright, lots of detail with very interesting architecture which i didn't know from riga...
Regards, Henk

Hello Kristine,

Wow, that is a wonderful job they did there in rebuilding that piece of 'decadent' German architecture ;-). Funny, seeing the history of the earliest building, I am not sure what the original architectural influence is. The building has been expanded over centuries with various architectural influences.
I especially like one review of the monument on the internet, which was talking about 'a posh cultural monument'.

Must have been a kind of 'Sodom and Gomorra' house, reading that the Blackheads were characteristically young, unmarried merchants and ship captains - and there was a party room on the second floor. Long lonely months at sea and then back to Blakchead's House .... :-)

Greetings!
Dennis

Kristine, this is a surprise, if I had seen it before yesterday I would have known what the formal architecture looked like. detail is incredible and the shadows are not so deep as to steal the attention away fro the rest of the composition, great job.

Greg

Oooohhhhh, this is just perfect, Kristine. The early light, the contrast, the pure and clean colors of the buildings, the sky and the lines in the composition ... a great work!

Hi Kristine,

How do you do it that you have always so great sun, hmmm?:)
Now I know the reason here we have only clouds and rain - it's all 'cause of you:P

And seriously...Superb shot. The colours and composition are suberb. Perfect blue sky and of course the building itself is also interesting.

Good job!

Sveika Kristina,

A very effective architectural portrait of the (reconstructed) guild house. The style is very different than typical structures one sees in Sweden, Finland, and other Baltic countries, but I don't know those in Estonia and Lithuania. Your note is highly informative, as usual.

Warm regards,

Bulent

Hi Kristine,

Hi Kristine,
Very beautiful architecture. The right part really looks like a set of theater because we do not see the back part. You chose the good hour as the lighting.
Bravo

Hi Avene,
Actually the sunlight and shadow creates a very dramatic composition with this ornate building against the beautiful, sunny sky. Your note is fascinating as well.
HLJ, Pat

Hi Kristine, very colourful shot with excellent sky, you did quite a good job on the exposure control here, as the the details on the facades which are in shadow look fabulous. Nice contrast with the sunlit statue.

Cheers
A

Hello Kristine
Delicious light from the side & excellent colours, especially the orange on the facade & the tiled roof. Slightly diagonal POV looks good. The style is very different than typical styles we see from Europe, at least in my novice eyes. Well done Kristine!

Hi Kristine,

great shot of this amazing place! You were lucky for the light and thanks to it rich colours, when I was in Riga, I was too late for afternoon light, and part of the square was already in dark, unfortunately, now I remembered so well thanks to this photo...good job!

Take care, Ivana

Hi Kristine:

It is always very pleasing to note architectural works of art like this, with great elegance and distinction.

The details, the majesty of the elements, forms and beautiful colors, determining an excellent composition, from a proper perspective.

Thank you for sharing.

John

Hello Kristine,
That's a beautiful picture of those bright buildings.
I'll be there in 2 days, not sure I get as lucky with you!
Estelle

Hey Kristine,
