View of Riga's old town from across the Daugava river. Taken around 8 o'clock in the evening after a miserable day of non-stop cold rain. Originally I intended to post a photo of the entire rainbow, but I thought the buildings looked too small, so I decided to show this 22mm version. I will add the 12mm. version to workshop.

Its the rainbow season on TE, but the first one over Riga! The typical dark sky leaves no doubt about the the fact that more rain is coming... I didnt wait for your workshop to comment, because this one is already pleasing and well composed. The buildings fill minimum space that allow wonderful pastel reflections on the water and the rainbow above them.
Great timing to catch this particular sunny light, that detach them from the surrounding dark environment.
P.S.: After looking at your workshop, I understand your dilemma, because seeing a full rainbow is very impressive. But I think your main post is more attention getter.

Great shot Tan! The light in this is wonderful, really lighting up the buildings and making them stand out against the dark sky and water. Even without the rainbow this would be a beautiful shot, and the rainbow of course adds another level to it. Excellent!

Lovely, wonderfull, breathtaking... I love rainbows. Magnificent composition and exposure was very well calculated.
PS. I agree with you, this one is far much better than the one with the full rainbow, in my opinion.
watercoolant (96) 2007-06-04 21:11
The lighting is just amazing! The contrast between the rainbow and buildings against the sky just makes it surreal!
asajernigan (20906) 2007-06-04 22:03
Both photos are great! The lighting and colors are great here with a fine reflection and rainbow. The colors in the reflection compliment the rainbow very well.
gneufeld (15884) 2007-06-04 22:08
This is a most splendid shot! The colors are spectacular and one of the finest rainbow shots I have seen in a very long time. Great work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

So welcome back and I'm looking forward to discovering more european pictures from you ! I see even in the far north and despite the rain you found the captain's light to provide miraculous light to the city skyline by the Daugava. Looking at both version I understand your dilemna as well, I like the one with the full rainbow and I think cutting some foreground water it would qualify for a large post, just an idea if you ever run out of pictures, which I doubt ;-)
Have a nice day,

Wow.....this is a great picture.....colorful rainbow, mostly cloudy sky and lil bit of snshine on the buildings and dark water.....absolutely blissful
axiotea (21649) 2007-06-05 2:08
Excellent timing and capture of the rainbow and light illuminating the colored architecture and its reflection in the water. The bridge with the street lamps is creating a kind of diagonal which also looks good. I like also better the main post :) It goes to my theme 'more fav.pictures 1'
Have a nice day

Very happy to found a picture from you. I can't imagine what you are doing to be at the good place at the right time. Light is absolutly outstanding. Despite we can see all the rainbow I prefer the 22 version because the town appear less far. I really like it

What to say....just beautiful. Absolute stunning light over the city and that rainbow really strikes the scene. Most captures are depend on luck in were you stand, but you had really the perfect location for this...great shot man, really good..!!!

Your picture got an avalanche of good comments, and I can understand why. It is a very impressive picture of a beautiful river bank.
But I have on my side some reserves...
Yes, honestly, I prefer the larger release.
Because I think the crop doesn't enhance the picture. It is just a personal opinion, but let me explain why ...
Here, the buildings looks small too.
The saturated colors are more visible, and they looks unreal and pushed (even they are not).
The composition is less interesting, as the rainbow is cutten but the bridge not more important.
The sharpness is not enhanced by the new size.
Maybe it is just an illusion, but I see also a slight tilt.
The feeling of wide space and the massive presence of the rainbow have disappear.
It is the first time I wrote some "negative" comment, but you are a very good photograph, and I think you can endure some critic.
belido (19934) 2007-06-05 7:42
nice cityscape. The dark clouds and the reflections on the water enhance the composition. Well done.
jonathan_hart (21274) 2007-06-05 9:59
excellent POV and moment captured, very nice photo, the WS version is good too, well done
carper (96) 2007-06-05 12:09

Hi Tan. I think you chose the best picture top show on the web but If you print large then the WS is better. Both are excellent.
gilou530 (34) 2007-06-05 16:37
Gerrit (45858) 2007-06-05 16:42
The rainbow as well as the reflection of the buidi9ngs and the enormous contrast create a very special and beautiful picture. An excellent skyline too.
vincent24 (9060) 2007-06-05 16:50
Rainbows are quite popular thes days on TE,the WS is impressive but i think i prefer this one because we can see more details of the city and the strong contrast with the dark sky,
Angelillo (9372) 2007-06-05 17:29
The light is wonderful, and the rainbow emerging from this cloudy and dark sky is quite impressive. Great panorama, big depth and a rich colors schema. Beautiful. Thanks,

excellent cilch' avec ce couche de soleil

Tan bey selamlar,
Mükemmel bir kare. Gökkuşağı, renkler, derinlik ve binaların üzerindeki ışık süper. Gökyüzü, denize yansımalar da nefis.
Etkileyici ve nefes kesici bir kare.
WS çalışması da mükemmel olmuş.
dkeus31 (27735) 2007-06-07 6:01
A nice image, the light and reflexion on the buildings is great and also the the contrast by the dark sky.
plimrn (21344) 2007-06-07 10:25
Both shots are beautiful I would have grdoes give better detail. eat difficulty deciding which to make the PP!! It is so difficult to capture the whole arch but the more close in framing. Rainbows ore so transitory and to squeeze out two excellent shots with perfect framing and bright colors is impressive. HLJ, Pat
scobert (5355) 2007-06-07 10:37
Excellent, I get to be the first one to critique your photo. There is really nothing that I can criticize about your photograph. The clouds, the rainbow, the lighting on the buildings, and the reflections on the water play on each other very well. Beautiful image!
kevinos (7393) 2007-06-07 13:04
Your ability to create these stunning and dramatic images is amazing ,Tan. the light , colour and drama here are wonderful. regards kevin
Stepan (27210) 2007-06-08 1:24
A horizontal thin frame would have probably been interesting but except that, the moment is impressive and technically well captured. A lovely skyline in a cool light.
meltemi (0) 2007-06-08 15:28
A fantastic picture for the evening. I can relax and dream when I look at it.
Again an impressive work, I like this place in that blue colour, the rainbow and the coloured roofs.
anesugur (18789) 2007-06-08 15:58
Angshu (55035) 2007-06-09 0:52
Glorious light as it lights up the buildings against the dark sky & the waters below. The rainbow is a great addition. Having seen your WS, I'm in a dilemma...I think even with part of the rainbow I'll go with your original post.
siolaw (38088) 2007-06-10 1:43
Great light here and intense and strong colors of this rainbow... I like the tight framing of this rainbow and the nice view over Riga.. Beautiful pastel reflections!
pboehringer (770) 2007-06-12 11:14
So, places like this and stunning moment and images like this are the reason why you couldn't make it to the TE meeting? I fully understand and I wish I could have the same sort of excuse :-)
You did a good decision in taking the 22mm as the main post. Obviously it is nice to see the whole rainbow on the 12mm, but the real punch is present with the houses in a decent scale. Unfortunately I have the impression of a slight tilt to the right. Minor detail taking into account the stunning view that you're presenting us here.
Didi (55537) 2007-06-16 19:15
Very nice rainbow with a big concentration of lights on the town and very nice dramatic sky.
I add your picture in my group theme.
