Riomaggiore (Rimasùu in the local dialect) is a village and a commune in the province of La Spezia, situated in a small valley in the Liguria region of Italy.
It is the first of the Cinque Terre one meets coming from La Spezia.
The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town's vineyards.
Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean's Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses.
The Via dell'Amore is a path connecting Riomaggiore to its frazione Manarola, also part of the Cinque Terre.
Riomaggiore is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre, all connected by trail. The water and mountainside have been declared national parks.
Nestled between two steep terraced hills that descend in abrupt cliffs to the sea, the historic borough of Riomaggiore strikes visitors with its tall vertically built colourful houses. While strolling amidst the tight network of alleyways, the village’s archways and staircases offer charming shifts of light and shade. All of the houses have two entrances: one at the façade on the street level, the other at the rear at the level of the higher road. In the 1500s, these structures guaranteed an escape route in case of Saracen attacks. The first history of Riomaggiore dates back to 1239, when the populations of the Carpena region vowed fidelity to the Genoese. Then again in 1251 when the inhabitants of the small fractions along the coast of Casen, Cacinagora, Saricò and Lemen decided to join at the mouth of the “river” to found Riomaggiore.

Paesaggio coi fiocchi, mare e cielo circoscrivono questo angolino delle Cinque Terre. Peccato quei palazzetti rossi isolati in alto a sinistra.

I've never seen a village shaped in a V; although I visited Cinque terre by train and foot. It's fascinating to me that this is the view fromn the sea. The note is also excellent.

Un titre bien choisi pour présenter ce village en bord de mer.
Jolies couleurs sous un beau ciel azur.
