Detail of the head of The Boxer, in the National Museum of Rome. This stunning statue features a boxer after his fight with his gloves still on. It displays wonderfully the exhaustion that he must have been feeling and allows us an insight into the sporting practices of the ancient Romans.
The statue itself is made of bronze using a technique known as the lost wax process and the slits in the face of the statue are a result of this process. This involved the assembledge of various component part and the welding of them together to form the whole statue. In this case, the head, arms and left leg were atatched to the torso and right leg, which were a single piece. His forearms, genitals and both his middle toes were also made and added seperately. This statue is hollow and this allowed for experts to study its construction extremely efficiently.
The statue is created with bronze of varying alloy ratios. This, by increasing the proportion of copper or of tin, can change the colouring of the metal for various parts of the structure's detail, such as the ematoma under his right eye or his reddish lips. |
