Soprano Leyla Gencer, who made her career at Italy's famed La Scala opera house, has died in Milan, officials said Saturday. She was 80.

The singer known as "La Diva Turca" died on Friday of respiratory problems and heart failure at home in Milan, La Scala and the Turkish State Opera said.

La Scala expressed "immense sorrow" over Gencer's death and said the singer had "one of the most emotional voices of any time."

It said in a statement that her performances at La Scala had provided "years of unrepeatable splendour."

Gencer was born in Istanbul in 1928 to a Polish mother and a Turkish father.

Her repertoire during a career spanning some 30 years included more than 70 roles. At La Scala, she was cast as the first woman of Canterbury in the world premiere of Pizzeti's L'Assasinio nella Cattedralle. A debut at the Royal Opera House, in London, came in 1962 when she performed Elisabetta in Don Giovanni.

After retiring from opera in 1985, the singer devoted herself to training young talents at La Scala and at the Turkish State Opera. An annual Turkish-sponsored voice competition is named after her.

A ceremony was held at La Scala on Monday, and a funeral in San Babila Church in Milan.

Her ashes will be taken to Istanbul tomorrow, to be scattered over the Bosporus, in line with her wishes...

Ciao Korkut,
excellent scene taken that fits well with the title and the note. Very good tonality and light. Wonderful perspective and graphic impact
Anna

queste sacre antiche piante,
a noi volgi il bel sembiante
senza nube e senza vel...
tempra, o diva,
tempra tu de’ cori ardenti
tempra ancora lo zelo audace,
spargi in terra quella pace
che regnar tu fai nel ciel...

Merhaba sevgili Korkut !
Tebrikler
Gözüne gönlüne sağlık
Selam ve sevgilerle
MESUT ILGIM

Ciao Korkut,
I was wondering if this image was actually the famous theatre... pfff no !
A very sci-fi environment here, in the blade runner underworld style... but you managed to include the lonely woman to lift it up a bit. Looks she was in a hurry, must not have felt safe having a giant camera maniac running after her ;-))
Have a nice day jY

merhaba korkut bey

Your picture has the all elements that you like Korkut! . Night, internal spaces, presence in a feminin way, lightings with artistic provision and a good corner shot. I I believe you you only put the talent! and the marvellous result comes. I like! the idea of composition and the correct placement in the picture of all.

Meraba Korkut, Tavanın grafikselliğini iyi farketmişsin, enfes bir kare çıkmış ortaya tebrikler..

Hi Korkut,
I bet that the roof and the woman was the reason where you took this picture:-)
beautiful image with good perspective and contrast,
interesting and informative note about Leyla Gencer,
well done,
Dimitris.

Interesting photo Dr. Boston.
Try to increase a bit the sharpness and the contrast. I like the "zoom" effect here.
Today we had the second bath .. it was sooooooooo nice....
Kisses from family to family :-D

I read about the death of Leyla Gencer a few days ago. I have to admit that I didn’t know her since I’m no opera fan. Your photo fits pretty well to this sad occasion.

I think this is the best of your last three postings with strong graphism and very good frame composition. I think though that it needed a bit more contrast. Furthermore I wonder about the noise. It’s too much for ISO 320. Did you add some on purpose?
Cheers
Andreas

Geia sou bostani mou!

Fantastic atmosphere, great light managment, perfect choice of b&w! Great framing and composition, great positioning of the lady. Beautiful lights on the roof, rather melancholic and kinda futuristic mood. Congratulations!

The Giritli

PS. I am getting very close to a decision, filaraki mou...

Korkutcann,
bililrsinki pek dokunaklı kritik yazamam hele senin fotoğraflarına hiç bişey yazamam. zaten fotoğrafında ve özellikle notunda herşeyi öyle güzel anlatıyorsunki.
ellerine sağlık

mali

Interesting choice of image for your memorial post. You have a very creative mind: I suppose you have to "think outside the box" when making difficult diagnoses.
I think the hazy atmosphere from the noise and low contrast is perfect for your purpose. Any other time I would say cut the noise and zap up the contrast. Well done
Kath

Korkut Merhaba,
Tebrikler
